6/5/2016 0 Comments iBooks is showing books that I don't actually have stored on my iPad (or iPhone)Have you found that your iBooks seems to be showing books that you don't want to see on your iPad (or iPhone) - books that you thought you had removed after your finished reading them? This has caused confusion for several clients who have visited iTandCoffee recently - worried that the books that appearing in the iBooks 'bookshelf' are actually taking up space on their i-Device. As an example, I only currently have two iBooks novels downloaded to my iPad at the moment. But I also see a long list of other books that I have downloaded previously (often just as part of demonstrations in classes!). Why are these other books appearing in my bookshelf? And how to I make them go away and only show downloaded books. The extra books that you are seeing books that are those that registered against your iTunes account, but not currently downloaded to your i-Device. It is a simple fix to stop these 'iCloud' books from appearing. Just tap on the Books option at top middle, to view your list of Collections. You will see an option at the very bottom - Hide iCloud Books. Turning on this option will mean that you will no longer see the extra books. If ever you do want to download a previous purchased book again, just turn this option back off to make all iCloud books appear again. Then, tap on the required book to download it (in which case the cloud symbol at top right will disappear).
5/5/2016 1 Comment Kids who lose their school or uni work due to computer glitch - and the parents who suffer the consequences!I have lost track of the number of times that I have been contacted by parents who are dealing with distraught secondary or tertiary aged students in their household - kids who have had a 'major technical glitch' and have lost key files from their computer. In some cases, it has been a hard drive crash that has caused the loss of ALL of the content of their computer. If you are a parent of a child who uses an iPad, other tablet, or computer for their school or uni work, it might be time to check in with them to see if they have a backup strategy in place for their important and precious files. If they have a computer, do they back up regularly to an external hard drive? Or do they use a cloud storage solution like Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, or iCloud Drive? Do they use iCloud and have iCloud Backup enabled on their iPad and iPhone.? It is so easy to put in place a backup strategy and keep important information safe. If they or you don't know how to do this, iTandCoffee can help. We are seeking expressions of interest for a new session on the topic 'How to keep your valuable data safe - options for backing up and cloud storage'. If you are interested in attending such a session - or sending along your student child - please email classes@itandcoffee.com.au to let us know. We will then be in touch if there is enough interest to run this class. (Note. Private appointments can be arranged at any time, either at iTandCoffee or in your own home.) Just in case you are interested in some further reading matter, here are some previous articles published by iTandCoffee on this very topic. 5/5/2016 0 Comments Do I need to regularly close apps on my iPad and iPhone (by swiping up in 'Task Switcher)?Have you been told by a helpful family member or friend that it is ESSENTIAL that you regularly 'close' your apps on your iPad or iPhone, to avoid draining your battery or over-using your internet data? Every week, I see clients who, while they may know only a limited amount about their iPad or iPhone, will show me this key 'trick' that their kids or grandkids have shown them. Well, here's one you can tell those kids and grandkids! It is NOT necessary to do this. While it is definitely necessary to keep the number of 'open' apps under control on a computer, iPads and iPhones (and other mobile devices) are quite different in how they manage your Apps. When an app is not in use, it goes into a 'suspended' state, and is not consuming data or battery. Instead, the kids and grandkids should be telling you to check that other more important settings, to ensure that you don't unexpected consume battery and data. Find out what setting to adjust to conserve data and battery in these past iTandCoffee articles. You will see, this topic features regularly in this blog!
Do you have a new iPad or iPhone, and want to install the (supposedly) free Apple products for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations and movie making? Pages, Numbers, Keynote and iMovie should be available as FREE downloads on most iPads or iPhones purchased since September 2013 (assuming they are running either iOS 8 or 9). If your device has 32GB or more of storage, you may find that these apps are already installed. On 16GB devices, however, the apps must be downloaded from the App Store. (This is because the apps take quite a bit of your storage space, so Apple doesn't want to take up this space unless you really need these apps.) If you find, in the App Store, that the apps have a price of $14.99 (instead of showing 'Get' or the 'cloud' symbol), it most likely means that your device has not been registered against your Apple ID - meaning that Apple does not know the model of your Apple ID, to assess if you get the apps for free. To rectify this, just go to https://supportprofile.apple.com/ and complete the process of registering your iPad or iPhone. After this is done, go back to the App Store - and you should see the App's price has gone. Managing the storage on your Mac can be a real challenge, especially for those of us who have MacBooks with only 128 or 256GB storage - or on a family Mac that several people use. When you check out the storage availability on your Mac, and try to work out just what it is that is using up all your space, you may find that a large amount of space is dedicated to 'Other'. What is taking up this 'Other' space? And how do you find all those 'storage hogs' on your Mac? Find out in this week's Handy Hint for Mac just how you can easily you can determine what is taking up all the space on your Mac, including discovering what 'Other' contains. Then you'll be able to do a big cleanup on the basis of this information! I managed to regain over 30GB of space on my Macbook Air in just a few minutes, dramatically improving its performance (since it was previously down to around 1GB of free storage). iTandCoffee Club members can view this hint by clicking on the below button.
