The process of re-organsing your files into folders can be quite tedious. But lately, I have been using a different method of moving my files around or choosing a 'Save' location in Finder - one that I am absolutely loving. Check out this week's Mac Handy Hint for details. 18/9/2015 0 Comments An oldie but a goodie - how to make your iPhone flash when it rings or alerts youDuring a the 'Introduction to the iPad and iPhone' class at iTandCoffee this week, my phone rang while it was muted - and those at the class were curious to see that the phone was flashing while it was ringing. I explained to the class that this feature allows me to find my ringing phone in my bottomless pit of a handbag. So, I promised to include this Handy Hint from long ago about how to set this up. 17/9/2015 1 Comment iOS 9 has broken my Commbank AppYes, I know I tell others to wait a while before downloading the latest upgrade to the iPad and iPhone. It is best to let other find the teething problems, and wait for these problems to be resolved before taking on the latest, greatest version of iOS. iOS 9 was released overnight on 16th/17th September. So, this morning I went against my advice to others and downloaded the new iOS. Things have gone relatively smoothly until this evening when I went to use my Commbank App to do some banking. Alas, the Commbank app won't work. Even a hard reboot of my iPhone and un-installing / re-installing the app did not help. Every attempt to access this App just takes me straight back to the Home Screen. Grrrr. Here's hoping this problem is fixed quickly. I very much rely on my Commbank iPhone app. Has anyone else been suffering this problem after being an 'early adopter' of iOS 9. *** Update Monday 21st September: I have found a fix! Check out this new article for details on how to stop your Commbank article from crashing. If you have found that the free 5Gb of iCloud storage is not enough to hold your iCloud data and backups (and, perhaps, your iCloud Photo Library - if you have turned this on), you may have already upgraded to the 20Gb storage plan at a cost of $1.29 per month.
Well, Apple has just changed the pricing and amount of storage associated with this 'tier' of their iCloud storage offering. You will now get 50Gb for an increased cost of $1.49 per month. Here are the tiers and monthly costs that now apply in Australia. 50 GB: $1.49 200 GB: $4.49 1 TB: $14.99 We just got an email confirming this for one of our family iCloud accounts. I clicked on the link in the below email, to see a very strange-looking page on the Apple website, with a very scrambled title (see image at bottom). Oops. 17/9/2015 0 Comments Backing up your iPad and iPhone in preparation for upgrade to iOS 9 or move to new device
Well, it's iOS upgrade time again. The latest version of iOS - iOS 9 - is now available for download and installation.
If you missed last week's article that outlined the content of iOS 9, here is the link. I wouldn't suggest everyone rush in and download immediately - perhaps let iOS 9 settle in for a week or so, to see if any major issues are reported. I will include an update on how it has been received in next week's newsletter. Before you even think about upgrading - or migrating to a brand new device - you need to be sure that you have a backup of your iPad and/or iPhone. While problems don't happen often, upgrades (and updates) can occasionally fail. If this occurs, you will want to be sure to have a backup from which you can restore your device. before re-attempting the upgrade/update. You have two options -
Backing up to iTunes Of course, to back up to iTunes, you need a computer running iTunes, a version that is compatible with your i-Device's iOS version. An iTunes backup is a much more comprehensive backup than an iCloud backup. It includes the full contents of your device, including the apps. Additionally, it does not require use of the internet - no upload/download data is used by this form of backup. If you have a computer, it is well worth doing an iTunes backup every now and then, even if you already backup to iCloud. Another important different with an iTunes backup is that, when you specify that you want to encrypt your iTunes backup, that backup will include any passwords used by your device, and will ensure these are restored to your device when you restore from the backup. An un-encrypted iTunes backup will not store passwords, so you will need to re-do these when your device is re-instated. Sometimes, this can cause quite a bit of grief - trying to remember all those key passwords. Backing up to iCloud An iCloud backup only backs up those things that are not already available for re-downloading from iCloud/iTunes and requires (of course) use of the internet to re-instate your device. And an iCloud backup will not back up passwords. Restoring from an iCloud backup requires an internet connection and, depending on how much data is stored on your device, may use up a significant amount of your monthly data allowance. Need help with backups or upgrades? The whole area of backups and upgrades can get quite overwhelming for many. One of the topics that came up at recent Keeping Kids Safe on iPad, iPod Touch and iPhone classes with school parents was that of how to ensure place parental controls on YouTube. Many people are not aware that YouTube actually includes a setting that allows you to restrict that YouTube content that kids will see. Check out this article on the topic. If you are really concerned about how to really restrict what your kids can see on YouTube, you may want to consider a 'kid-friendly' YouTube app that replaces the standard YouTube app, and restricting your child's access to the YouTube website in Safari (or even blocking their use of Safari). For more about how to set up Parental Controls on an iPad, iPod Touch and iPhone, why not attend a Keeping Kids Safe on iPad, iPod Touch and iPhone class at iTandCoffee in October and November. For those of you interested in a comparison of the monthly cost of the phone plans for each of the available iPhones, here are 3 tables that I have put together - with prices drawn from the Telstra, Optus and Vodafone websites on September 13th 2015. The information in the below tables is intended as a guide only - please make sure you check the relevant website for current pricing and terms and conditions. You may well have already seen the press articles on this, but I promised to include an update in this newsletter about the new products that were announced by Apple on September 9 (September 10 in Australia). Here is the list, just to offer a summary for those who are no yet 'in the know'. For further details on each, click on the item to view the relevant article.
I really love my iPhone 6 Plus, which is coming up for its first birthday. On Thursday this week, Apple announced a newer version of this phone (and of the iPhone 6), called the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus, which will be available in stores from Sept 25th. Pre-orders open today (Saturday 12th) at 5:01pm. Here is an article from The Australian today, outlining the features of this latest/greatest phone from Apple. For those of you who don't want to read the full article, here is a quick summary of the new features.
The question for me is, are the new features offered by the 6S sufficient to warrant an upgrade - especially given that the price of the 64GB equivalent to my current phone will be a whopping $1379. That's nearly the same price as a 13in Macbook Air with 128GB! Pricing for outright purchase
At the time of writing this article, there is no news on any price reduction for earlier model iPhones. Presumably, this will be announced of the next few days. That's be a topic for next week's newsletter. Pricing for iPhone 6S on a planTelcos announced their pricing for plans for the new iPhone 6S after 5pm on Saturday 12/9/15.
For those interested in a comparison of the plans on offer from Telstra, Optus and Vodafone - including ALL models of iPhone currently available from these Telcos - check out the below article just put together by iTandCoffee. Apart from the brand new iPad Pro, the only other iPad that received an upgrade is the iPad Mini, the latest of which is now the iPad Mini.
Pricing for the older models of iPad has not been announced yet, so stay tuned if you are waiting to see if there is a price drop. Pricing for the iPad Mini 4 in Australia will be as follows: Wi-Fi:
