I have previously featured this tip, and thought I'd re-run it after making use of it myself in putting together some Family History books for my kids.
If you have some slides that you would like to scan into digital format, there is an App that may be worth a try - and it is from the same people who made one of my favourite photo scanning apps (which I have covered in this previous Handy Hint: For those who are looking to organise all those old photos - there's a great app for that!).

Anyone who knows me well knows that I am a gardening and plant luddite. I know nothing.
But my iPhone, iPad and Mac can how help me out if ever I do need to identify a plant. Not only that, it can identify dog breeds, types of bird, landmarks and more. I love this feature of my Apple Watch and made use of it a couple of times when away with friends last weekend.
When taking a group shot that I want to be part of, I make use of the Camera Remote Control feature on my Apple Watch. Last weekend, we were away with friends in the Yarra Valley in Victoria. We walked through the rainforest near Warburton, and there were some lovely views of water cascading over rocks.
I took a few pictures with my iPhone, and enabled the 'long exposure' feature for one of them - to give the effect shown in the 'After' photo above right. One of our friends was keen to learn how to do the same with his own photos, so I figured this was probably worthy of a Handy Hint in this blog! Here it is. I am sure that this is a problem that the majority of people suffer when it comes to Photos - the problem of duplicated photos and how to clean up all those extra copies of the same photo.
I have been asked three times this week in different appointments for advice on how this clean-up can be achieved in the Photos App on the Mac - how to get rid of the duplicates without having to manually look for and delete double-ups. Unfortunately, there is not a built-in tool on the Mac for performing such a clean-up - but there is a solution. I have previously featured articles that talk about using the 'screen capture' and 'cropping' method of capturing a still frame from a video that is in your Photos (read on for links to these articles). This is so handy when you have taken a video, but realise later that you didn't get any decent photos of the same occasion/event/scene.
While updating the Introduction to the Mac series of guides to incorporate latest macOS Monterey screens and features, I noticed a feature in the Photos app that I hadn't come across previously - one that allows you to do this so quickly and easily. And so I looked for a similar feature on the iPad and iPhone. As usual, there was an app for that! 20/10/2021 0 Comments This is such a great feature of iOS/iPadOS 15 - Live Text in Photos, Camera and SafariThere is a new feature of iOS/iPad 15 that I particularly love - the ability to select text that is in an image and then copy and paste it, translate it, share it and more.
It works whether you are in the Photos app, in Safari, or when you are pointing your device's camera at something. So that hard-copy page of text can now be so easily converted into typed and editable text, without needing any third-party app to achieve this.
In a recent tip, after the release of iOS/iPadOS 15, we looked at how you can adjust the date, time and location of a photo in Photos on the iPad and iPhone. (Here is that tip if you missed it.)
You can now also name the people who are in your photos, so that they appear in the People album. This a such a great way of collecting all the photos of the people you love and know into one place - without you having to do all the work of finding them. By adding name tags to the people in your photos, you help the facial recognition technology identify even more photos of the same person in the rest of your library. Lately, I have been taking an unusually large number of videos, and the subject of these videos has been our new family member, Wally - who is now 5 months old.
Several of these videos have been shared with family and friends - and some have even made it onto my Facebook page. Before sharing, I have been quickly editing the videos - trimming them to just include the clip that I want to share, and also (in some cases) cropping them to a different aspect ratio and/or removing the sound. It is so easy to do all these things in the Photos app on the iPhone and iPad.
When browsing your photos in the Photos app on the iPhone or iPad, you may come across a photos that would be a lovely background - or Wallpaper - for your Lock screen or Home screen.
You can always adjust these background by visiting Settings -> Wallpaper, and then finding that photo amongst your long list of photos. You might consider making it a Favourite so that you can more easily find it when doing this. But there is a much easier way to set a photo as your Wallpaper directly from the Photos app. |
