iPhone and iPad tip - Keeping track of which apps are using your Cellular/Mobile data each month

Picture
Today is the 17th of the month so, as happens on every 17th, a reminder has popped up on my iPhone.  This reminder tells me to 'Reset Cellular Usage'.

Why have I set myself this reminder and what does it mean?

On my phone, I have a 1GB allowance for cellular data each month, starting on the 17th of the month.   (Note.  'Mobile' data and 'Cellular' data are basically the same thing.)

Most months, this is completely sufficient for my needs.  But, there are some months when I use more mobile data and fly close to my monthly limit.

I like to be able to see just what apps and features on my iPhone are the main culprits for mobile data usage each month.  I make sure that those that don't really need to use this data allowance are disabled from using cellular data and can only operate on WiFi.

The easiest way to track my total data usage for the month and my app-by-app and feature-by-beature usage is to reset the usage stats on the first day of my billing cycle - ie the 17th.

This Handy Hint (including a video) for iTandCoffee Club members shows you how to do this.

Non-members will be able to view this hint for the week from March 20th.

Join the iTandCoffee Club to view hints like this any time!  Other related hints and tips are included below.

Here's a really good reason why you should now update to the latest iOS 8 version ...

If you haven't already updated to the latest version of iOS, here is a really good reason to 'take the plunge'.

This article alleges that there is a device that can be purchased online for only US$300 that can crack your passcode if you have a 4-digit pin on your iPhone or iPad.

Here's the article.

For travellers: how to get SatNav on your iPhone or iPad when you don't have internet

Picture
We are currently in the throws of sorting out arrangements for an upcoming trip.

One of the items on my 'to do' list is to work out what options we have for navigation on our driving trip through Italy and France. (Yes, it's a hard life!)

We will have Wi Fi at all of our accommodation, so the only real need that we might have for internet 'on the go' is for navigation.

We will be purchasing a Woolworths Global Roaming SIM card so that we have phone access.  Data usage on this SIM will cost 45c/MB.  If use the internet for navigation on a regular basis, the data usage via this SIM will become very costly.

So, instead of this solution, I have decided to download a fantastic app - called Sygic Europe: GPS Navigation.

This navigation app is powered by TomTom maps, and (according to the 'blurb' in the App Store) is the most installed offline navigation app.  It gives you free map updates, shows fixed speed cameras and and includes millions of points-of-interest!

The Sygic Europe app includes GPS for the UK - here is the full list of countries that it covers.

TOMTOM MAPS INCLUDED
Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canary Islands, Croatia, Czech republic, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom, Ukraine, Vatican City State

Transit roads only: Albania, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Moldova.

Sygic Europ is currently reduced by 30% in the Australian App store (until 23/3), and costs $43.99.  (Normally, it will be around $68.)

Given that hiring of a GPS through the car hire company would have cost $15/day, this is a much cheaper option - and it will give us offline GPS for the entire trip, not just when we have a hire car.
Visit this app in the App Store

Receiving and sending SMS messages on your Mac

For iTandCoffee Club Members Only ...

Picture
A great new feature that arrived with the combination of OS X Yosemite on the Mac and iOS 8 on the iPhone is the ability to send and receive SMS messages on you Mac.

Previously, you could only see and send iMessages (ie. the 'blue' speech bubbles) in the Messages app on your Mac.  Now you can see both green and blue bubbles!

I love that I don't have to pick up my phone to answer my texts.  It is so much easier to type my response using my Mac keyboard, especially when I am busily working.

Find out how to turn on this really handy feature.  Make sure you are logged in to your iTandCoffee Club account so that you can view the tip.
