A reminder about a birthday just appeared on my iPhone screen and my Mac screen. But this reminder was not one that I specifically entered into my Reminders app or my Calendar. So how did my iPhone know to remind me about this person's birthday? Well, there are a couple of ways that my iPhone, iPad and Mac know to remind me about people's birthdays. Once way is that I have recorded the birthdays of friends and family in my Contacts App. Here is a past Handy Hint on this topic for those of you who are members of the iTandCoffee Club. But I also get reminders for other peoples' birthdays, where these people are not in my Contacts. Where do these ones come from? If you are a Facebook user, you also may be receiving reminders about the birthdays of your Facebook friends. You can control whether you receive these reminders and, if you are not receiving such reminders, you can make some adjustments to turn the reminders 'on'. Check out this handy hint for details of how to turn Facebook Calendars reminders on and off in the Calendar App, and how to adjust your settings to allow or disallow Facebook's access to your Contacts. Perhaps you don't actually want your Contacts and Calendar apps to access your Facebook. This is easy to change, and is covered by the below handy hint. (To view any of the the above handy hints, you will need to be an iTandCoffee Club member.)

Well, you may have once again woken today to yet another iOS update on your iPhone or iPad - we are now up to iOS 9.1 (from previous version iOS 9.0.2)
Below is my screenshot showing the list of new features, improvements and bug fixes in this update. As per my usual advice, unless you are particularly eager to install this new version, let the update 'bed in' for a week or so. If there is no further update next Thursday night, then it would be worth proceeding after that. If you need any help with downloading and installing iOS 9, why not make a time to come to iTandCoffee and we can help you with it. Just call 1300 885 420 or email bookings@itandcoffee.com.au. How many times have you forgotten a password, and gone through the process of re-setting it (assuming you are able to do this). Many Mac users are not aware that, in many cases, their passwords are actually stored in a special place, called a Keychain. These passwords can be viewed whenever required from a utility called Keychain Access. All you need to know is the administrator password for your Mac, and this will allow you to view all of the passwords stored in your Keychain. Find out more about Keychain Access - and how to view your stored passwords - in this Mac Handy Hint for iTandCoffee club members. I must say that I missed this one when I initially looked through the set of changes and fixes that were delivered with iOS 9.1. It was only when I read the below article that I saw mention of it.
The News app has now been made available to Australian iPad and iPhone users. Have you noticed its appearance on your home screen?
If you haven't updated yet, it may be a good reason to go ahead and install iOS 9.1.
I'll leave the second article below to tell you more about the News App for iOS 9.1 users. Having released OS X El Capitan 10.11 at the end of September, Apple has this week released its first update - OS X 10.11.1.
I know one client who had been suffering with Mail issues which now seem resolved after this update - so if you too have had any issues with Mail after upgrading to El Capitan, it would be worth going ahead with this update. I personally haven't had issues with El Capitan, and it has been widely reported as being a fairly stable upgrade. In terms of recommending to upgrade or not upgrade, this is very much dependent on your Macs age, what version you are currently running, how much disk space you have left on your Mac, and whether you have a recent backup. If you need some advice on this, why not make a time with iTandCoffee - call 1300 885 420 or email bookings@itandcoffee.com.au. Here is a screenshot of the inclusions in the update release. 17/10/2015 0 Comments A video that answers the question, "Where do I safely store all my passwords?".In September 2015, iTandCoffee ran a free session to address that often-asked question, 'where do I store all my passwords'. During the session, we looked at downloading, setting up and using the free App, 1Password, for saving away all sorts of passwords and other private information. At that session, I promised the attendees that the video of the session would be made available on the iTandCoffee website. I know it's been a while, but I have finally had a chance to prepare and upload the video. The video is now available for viewing any time by all iTandCoffee Club members. Just click/tap on the link below, or the website menu option iTandCoffee Club -> Members Only Content -> Videos -> 1Password Workshop. There is such a vast array of fantastic apps available for iPads and iPhones, but many owners of these great devices are unable to take advantage of these apps because they have not yet learned how to look for and download Apps from App Store.
At our 'Let's Go Shopping' session this coming Thursday Oct 22nd, 10am-12pm, we will be looking at this very topic: what apps are worth getting, how do you go about getting them, a look at using a couple of key apps, how to pay for apps, and much more. We will also look at getting movies, TV shows, books, music and more. If you are interested in joining this session, we have a few spots left. Just click on the date in the below calendar (22nd), then select Continue›› to book. 16/10/2015 0 Comments An easy way to quickly call, message or Facetime people using your iPad and iPhoneiOS 9 has brought some great new features to the iPad and iPhone. One that I have been finding particularly useful allows me to really easily search people's contact details and call or text them (for those occasions where I don't want to ask Siri to do this for me). This feature is one of the new Spotlight Search capabilities. Find out more about this feature in this iPhone Handy Hint, for iTandCoffee Club members. This feature works for emails in any 'mailbox' - whether that be my 'Sent' mailbox, 'Inbox' or any other mailbox. One way of achieving this is 'forward' the email and, before sending, remove any of the extra 'bits' that show that it is a 'forwarded' email. The option I prefer to use is described in this week's Mac Handy HInt for iTandCoffee Club members. (Make sure you have signed in - use the link in the right-hand sidebar if you haven't yet.)
