I am gradually exploring the new special features of my iPhone 17 Pro - features that were not available on my iPhone 12 Pro.
In particular, I have been making use of two of these quite a bit - Clean Up and Styles.

This week, one of my clients needed a booklet done for a luncheon, showing the wine list and the menu for the event.
There were several places where I needed to type an 'e' with an accent. In Microsoft Word (and other apps), the accent gets added automatically by auto-correct for certain French words. But I had created the booklet in Canva, and had to manually add the accent where needed. Here's how to do this on a Mac. 29/10/2025 0 Comments How can I stop Mac Mail from showing an old email address for my friend - one that is no longer in Contacts?Have you noticed how your Mac's Mail app keeps a 'memory' of the email addresses that you have interacted with over time.
In some cases, these email addresses will be stored in the Contacts - but not always. If you remove an old email address from Contacts, it may still pop up as a suggestion in the To field when you compose an email and start typing the person's name. Here's how you can tell Mail to stop doing this - to forget that old email address and no longer show it. A feature of Safari in macOS 26 is that is brings the colour from the web page you are viewing into the search bar and tab bar area - which can, depending on the colour, can sometimes make these bars impossible to read.
I had to do a bit of searching, but finally found where I could turn off the feature to 'Show Colour in Tab Bar' After upgrading to iOS 26, I found that a feature that I used regularly on my iPhone had changed. It related to Screenshots (known on the iPhone as Screen Captures) - the feature where you can take a photo of what's on your screen.
Previously, when I took a screen shot (which, on my iPhone 12 was by quickly pressing the on/off switch and the volume-up switch at the same time), a little thumbnail would appear at the bottom left of the screen. It would disappear after a few seconds and the screenshot would then be found in my Photos. Or I could tap that thumbnail while it was still there to view the screenshot, crop it, mark it up, send it, etc. When I upgraded to iOS 26 and started using my new iPhone 17, I found that my screenshots were behaving differently. The appeared in full screen, and forced me to make a decision about what to do with them - which was a pain. Here's how I switched back to the old way of dealing with screenshots. The photos App in iOS 26 has undergone another significant change, one that I think improves the clunky design that came with iOS 18.
You now can easily switch between your Library view (which is your timeline showing all your photos in 'date taken' order) and your Collections view (which allows you to see the photos grouped and presented in different ways. That Library can then be sorted by Date Added, and can be filtered to only show certain types of media. In this week's handy hint, we take a quick look at these two main views and then a few tips for navigating the Library view - especially for those of you who, like me, have a very large Photos Library. In a separate Handy Hint, I describe how I used the 'Find my Car' feature of the iPhone to ask Siri to give me directions to my car when I lost it in a big car park.
Just recently, an iTandCoffee Club member found that this feature was not working for her, and contacted me to find out what she could do to make it work. 17/10/2025 0 Comments The frustrations (and time) associated with setting up a new iPhone (Updated)!Update 17th October 2025If you read the below report of my initial attempts to set up my new iPhone, you will see I was having persistent issues with syncing of iCloud data to the new iPhone and had to resort to re-setting my phone to factory settings and starting again. While this did resolve the issues with downloading of my large Notes library (which got 'stuck' and wouldn't continue, leaving me without access to my important Notes), it did not help with the downloading of my big Photos library. Several days after the reset, the count of downloaded Photos in my Photos library was not changed. A call to Apple Support proved fruitless. So, a week after the reset, I resorted to manually forcing the download of photos. I selected a year's worth of photos at a time, then chose the Share option, then Save to Files. This forced the download of the selected photos and, when that download was done (which took a while each time), I cancelled out of that Save to Files process. This left the photos downloaded By the 14 day mark, I finally had all my photos on the iPhone - and syncing has been working OK since. Phew! I am none to wiser about what caused the download issues, but have seen on forums that this issue has impacted lots of people. One suggestion was that it may be caused by an overload on Apple servers, wit lots of people who, like me, have recently received their new iPhones, setting up these new iPhones at the same time. One thing I also need to correct in my original article. The iPhone 17 and 17 Pro do have SIM card trays for physical SIMS. It is the iPhone Air that is eSIM only. So I was able to put my Belong physical SIM into my new iPhone without converting it to an eSIM. Here's the full article, reported 4th October 2025I received my new iPhone 17 Pro on Monday this past week, and it has been quite the exercise this time getting set up on my new iPhone. In fact, after 6 days, my iPhone is still not set up.
It is now Saturday, and it has been a 'work in progress' for the past 5.5 days - even though I restored from an iCloud backup, which should have brought everything from my old iPhone to my new iPhone. Unfortunately, even with an iCloud Backup, there is still lots of setup to do when you get a new iPhone and data to download from iCloud. Here's my list if issues and setup tasks so far - and I'm sure that there will be more that I discover each time I use an app/account for the first time on this device. Usually when I get a new phone, I am thrilled with the improvements it delivers.
I used to purchase a new iPhone every year or two and always noticed the improvements. I have held onto my latest iPhone (a 12 Pro) for 5 years - so I was expecting to be amazed by how much better my new iPhone 17 Pro would be. So far, that has not been the case - and here's why. Just last week, I was preparing a presentation for class that I had to present for a local library.
I wanted in include a couple of slides that provided links and QR codes for a few iTandCoffee pages (see example in image above). I have previously generated QR codes using Chrome. I went to generate the QR code for a particular web page, and found that the way you use to be able to do in Chrome had obviously changed. It took a bit of searching before I finally found the location of the Create QR Code option. Here's where I found it in Chrome on my Mac. |
