Google's parental controls now available in Australia

Picture
Several weeks ago, I shared an article about Google's new accounts for under-13's.  These accounts allow parents to monitor and control their child's use of their Android device using something called Family Link.  Unfortunately, at that point, these accounts were not yet available in Australia.

The good news this week is that Family Link is now available in Australia. So, for those of you who are interested in exploring how you can keep an eye on the kids' activity and usage of their mobile devices, here is an article on the topic from the Sydney Morning Herald.

Scam alerts!

Here are just some of the scams I came across this week. If you have any you would like to share with us, leave a comment at the bottom.

Beware of fake NAB text (or text from any other 'bank')

Picture
Just this morning, I received an SMS - it is shown on the left in the image above.  While I did know it would be a scam, I tapped the link on my iPhone to see where it took me.  (I wouldn't recommend this to others, but knew in this case I would be safe to look at the where it took me.)

On the right in the above image is the web page that I was taken to.  It looks very 'real', doesn't it?

But the first sign it is a scam is that there is no 'lock' symbol on the left of the website at the top of the screen, which you should always check for on any site that asks you to enter any details.  Here's what it should have looked like.
Picture

No, I don't have any 'Bitcoin'

Picture
In another text I received this week, I was advised that I had 'Bitcoin' in my account, valued at $7616.11.  Lucky me!  Unfortunately, yet another scam to beware of.

Fake WhatsApp app in the Google Play store

If you are an Android user, be sure that you didn't download a fake WhatsApp app that appeared in the Google Play store.  Apparently, over 1 million people have downloaded this fake, malicious app.

Read more about this one here:
  • Watch out for this fake version of WhatsApp found lurking on Google Play Store

Beware of dating apps

While very few people who read this newsletter are likely to be using dating apps like Tinder, here is news of potential 'leaks' of your private information associated with these apps. (PS. I saw this in the press, not because I use any of these apps!)
  • Cybersecurity flaws in these popular dating apps could put business professionals at risk

Is it time to upgrade your Mac to High Sierra?

Those of you who watch this blog or read the iTandCoffee Newsletter will know that there have been several articles recently about the upgrade to iOS, iOS 11.

What hasn't had much coverage is the upgrade of Macs to the latest version of the Mac operating system, MacOS Sierra (10.13)
Picture
I must say that I held off on downloading and installing MacOS High Sierra for several weeks, because I am so reliant on my Mac for my work. I wanted to wait for the early 'glitches' to be ironed out.

I finally installed High Sierra a couple of weeks ago, and can report that I have not had any issues so far with it.

For most people who install High Sierra, the changes will be barely noticeable.  A few areas where you may notice differences are
  • Photos: Significant changes have been applied to the Photos app, mainly in the arrangement of the 'library' and 'albums', and providing great new editing features.
  • Safari: This app is now much faster, allows you to stop autoplaying of videos, limits advertising across websites (so that you don't see those annoying ads popping up everywhere based on searches you have done).
  • Notes: The updates you will have seen in iOS 11 are available on your Mac - formatted tables, and the ability to 'pin' a note to the top so that you can get to it quickly.

Here's an article from Macworld that provides more detail about what High Sierra delivers.
  • macOS High Sierra: Everything you need to know about Apple’s latest Mac operating system

On Wednesday this week, Apple released the awaited update to fix the recently reported KRACK Wi-Fi security flaw (see New Wi-Fi flaw leaves nearly every internet-connected device vulnerable).

Here is the Macworld article with details of the content of MacOS 10.13.1.
  • Apple releases macOS 10.13.1 High Sierra update
Is it time to upgrade to High Sierra?

For anyone who has a Mac that is capable of being updated to MacOS High Sierra, it is a good idea to install this latest upgrade, especially so that you 'plug' the major Wi-Fi security flaw.

Of course, this upgrade is only available for certain Macs - here's the list:
  • MacBook Pro – 2010 or later models
  • MacBook – Late 2009 or later models
  • MacBook Air – 2010 or later models
  • iMac – Late 2009 or later models
  • Mac Mini – 2010 or later models
  • Mac Pro – 2010 or later models

How to upgrade to MacOS High Sierra

As always, make sure you do a backup of your Mac - and that the backup has completed successfully - before you install any upgrade or update.

If you are not sure how to do this, we have a separate article that covers this topic.
How to back up your Mac
Once you have a valid backup, visit the Mac App Store App to find the High Sierra download option.

In the past, the latest upgrade has shown up in the Updates area of the Mac App Store.  This time, you will find the High Sierra download option in the
Featured area.  Or you can use the Search bar at top right to search for it.  (I only realised it had moved to Featured after I had already used the Search to download it.)

And again, another iOS update: why this one is significant

Picture
Once again this week, Apple has released another update to iOS 11 - this time a more major update, from iOS 11.0.3 to iOS 11.1.

It includes lots of fixes plus some new features.  I have screen-shotted the list of changes, and included them below.  So excited to have 'mythical creatures' in my emoji set (sarcasm there!).

If you have already updated to iOS, then definitely download and install iOS 11.1.  I have been using it since Wednesday, and have not encountered any issues.

Is it time to upgrade?

If you have not yet upgraded your iPad or iPhone, it is time to consider doing this, as the iOS 11.1 includes a very important fix for the major security flaw described in our last newsletter.  (New Wi-Fi flaw leaves nearly every internet-connected device vulnerable)

Just make sure that you have a completed backup of your device before you do this.  This can be to iTunes on a computer, or to iCloud.

Do you know how to check if you have an iCloud backup?

This week's handy hint for iTandCoffee Club members covers how to back up your iPad or iPhone to iCloud, and how to check when the backup was last done.  Members can view this hint by selecting the button below.
