Have you discovered 'app extensions'?  Here are some really great extensions for the Photos app.

Picture
You may not yet have heard of App Extensions in iOS 8 and, in particular, extensions for the Photos app.

On you iPhone and iPad, App extensions allow you, while using features of a particular standard app (such as Safari, Photos, Camera), to access additional features provided by another app - usually to give you some addtional features that are not otherwise available in the standard app.

You download an App that provides the extension and, when you open that new app, you give it permission to use a particular data or features on you i-Device.

For example, today I downloaded the iOS 8 App called DateStamper (which is free for both iPad and iPhone).  This app allows you, when editing a photo in the Photos apps, to add a date stamp to the photo.

Another free iPhone App called Quick allows you to quickly and easily add some text to a photo while you are editing it in the Photos app.

Below is an article describing ten of the best iOS 8 extensions for the Photos app - just click on the image to view the article.

If you are wondering how to the use extensions from, say, the Photos App, look out for an upcoming Handy Hint on this topic.

My brand new iPhone 6's battery is draining really fast!

Sandy says: I've taken the plunge and got a Iphone 6...BUT the battery is discharging very quickly...do you know why?

  Answer

Picture
There are quite a few things you can try to resolve this.  It may just be a setting (or settings) that need changing, or there may be an underlying problem that is causing this issue.

Try a Forced Reboot

This my 'first port of call' when my iPad or iPhone is behaving in a way that seems a bit strange or the battery seems to draining too fast.

Hold down the Home Button and Sleep Switch at the same time for 10 seconds or so, until the screen goes black and the Apple appears, then let go.

I have found that this has resolved battery problems in the past, especially after an ealier iOS 8 update.

Check what apps or system features are using up all your battery

A new feature of iOS 8 was an area in Settings that allows you to see what apps and features have been using up your device's battery - so that you can hopefully identify the culprit and close it down.

For example, there are some apps that may be running in 'background' mode, consuming data and battery - without you realising this.

Go to Settings  → General → Usage → Battery Usage

If you find an app that seems to be using up a lot of battery, bring up your task switcher and swipe the applicable app up to close it.

If it is a 'background activity' that is causing a problem, you may need to delve a bit deeper into your Settings to turn off the feature or stop it running in background.  (See further on this below.)

Picture

Picture

Turn off 'background app refresh' for apps that don't need it

iOS 7 introduced a new area in Settings  → General called Background App Refresh.

This feature 'allows apps to refresh their content when on Wi-Fi or cellular in background'.

You can turn the feature off for individual apps, or just turn it off at the top for all apps on your device.

I found the likes of Facebook to be particularly bad for battery (and data) drainage.

I have turned this feature off for all but four apps.
Picture

Turn off cellular data usage for apps that don't need it

For iPhones and for iPads that have cellular service, you can limit what apps are able to use your cellular data - something that can avoid unnecessary drainage of both your data and battery when you are on the go.

Go to Settings  → Cellular  (or Mobile, Cellular Data, Mobile Data), found in the first section of Settings.

In the lower part of the screen you will see a list of the apps on your device that want to use Cellular Data.  Turn off any that don't need internet access while you are on 3G/4G (ie they will then only work properly when you are on Wi-Fi).

If you don't need to use Cellular data at all, turn it off completely (first option in this settings screen) to conserve your battery.
Picture

Turn off Automatic Updates

In Settings → iTunes & App Store you will see a section called Automatic Downloads.

If any of the settings in this section are on, then updates to apps and/or content will happen automatically, regardless of whether your device is currently charging - something that could cause battery drain.

So turn this off if you want to avoid this.  (You will then need manually do updates from the App Store app instead.)

If you don't want to waste your Cellular Data downloading updates to apps and other content (which can sometimes be very very large!), turn off Use Cellular Data.
Picture

Check what apps are tracking your location

Many apps on your device can use or need information about your location.  In some cases, apps may be tracking your location even when you don't currently have the app open on your screen.  This can be a battery drainer.

To see what apps are using you location, and turn off those that you don't really want doing this, go to Settings  → Privacy  → Location Services.

There is a switch at the top to turn off Location Services for all apps (which I would not do, given that I aways want to have 'Find My iPhone' active as a theft deterrent), and then switches for each app that uses Location Services.

In most cases you will be able to choose from one of two or three options.
  • Never
  • While Using the App
  • Always
Picture

Turn off iCloud Drive sync'ing over cellular
iCloud is able to use the internet to share data and photos between your iCloud-connected devices.   But this is another area that utilises your battery (and your data).

To conserve both when you are not on Wi-Fi, disable use of Cellular Data for this sync'ing.

For iCloud Drive (if you have enabled this new feature), go to Settings → iCloud → iCloud Drive and, at the very bottom, slide the 'Use Cellular Data' switch to Off.

If you have not enabled iCloud Drive yet, this setting is in
Settings → iCloud → Documents and Data.
Picture

Turn down your display's brightness

Picture
A big battery hog on your iPad and iPhone is the display - the brighter the screen, the more battery it consumes.

So turn down the brightness as much as you can.  You can adjust the brightness from the Control Center.

Wwipe up from below the bottom of the screen to reveal the Control Center, and look for the brightness slider (indicated by 'suns' at either end).

A feature called Auto-Brightness can also consume a bit of battery, so can be turned off if you are trying to conserve power.

Turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when not needed

Both Bluetooth and WiFi use a significant amount our battery, so can be turned off when not in use to conserve battery.

As for the previous tip, these features can be turned on and off from the Control Center - in the image here, the left symbol shows Wi-Fi is on (as it has a white background).  Tap it to turn it off, making the background grey.
The same applies for the other symbol shown here for Bluetooth.
Picture

Turn off the movement of the screen (know as the 'parallax effect')

Have you noticed that, when you move your device around, the background seems to 'move' (and makes some people a bit dizzy!).  This is a feature called the 'parallax effect' and, while it might seem like a great feature, it is also something that uses more battery than a 'still' background.

To turn this effect off, go to Settings → General → Accessibility → Reduce Motion

Make sure your device goes to sleep quickly when not in use

Make sure you have a feature called 'Autolock' turned on.  Visit Settings  → General → Autolock.

Autolock will put your device to sleep when you are not using it.  When you turn it on, you nominate an autolock delay, which is the period after which your device will sleep when not in use.  Set this to as short a period as possible.

Reset All Settings

Apparently, there may be a chance that crashes of system programs in background, caused by issues with an iOS 8 update, could be the culprit.

To rule this out, reset all settings.  You will find this option in go to Settings  → General → Reset (which is the last option in the General area).

This does not delete any apps or their data from your device.  You Settings will just be set back to a 'default' state.

Any customisation your have previously applied to your Settings will have to be re-done, Wi-Fi passwords will have to be re-entered, you will need to sign back into iTunes, iCloud, iMessage, Facetime, etc.

If problems persist ...

If none of the above suggestions seem to do anything to improve your battery life, it might be time to pop in and see your friendly Apple Genius at the nearest Apple Store.  You can book an appointment from the Apple website - here is the link.

Yet another scam email that I have received - this time from 'Woolworths'

Yet another scam email has been doing the rounds recently, and hit my email inbox this week.  It seems to be offering me a free Woolworths voucher just for answering a single question.

At first glance it looks legitimate - with the Woolworths name and logo.

First indication that it is a scam is that there it doesn't read quite right - with a comma and a hyphen after the $150, and it seems to have the incorrect word in the sentence after that ('price' instead of 'prize').

Of course, the other dead giveaway is that the email address is not a Woolworths email address.
Picture
Woolworths has a posted the following alert on their website about this scam (click here to see the Woolworths web page).
"Please watch out for some Facebook & email scams using our name & logo that offer you a Woolworths gift card when you fill out a 'Customer Satisfaction Survey’. We've been alerted that there is one out in the public that is a scam that offers customers either a $100, $150 or $200 voucher once you fill in this survey. This is a scam, do not participate"

"All of our official competitions run from our Facebook Page at facebook.com/woolworths, and are posted on the ‘Promotions & Competitions’ page of our website."

Facebook post about ATM PIN reversal is not true!

For those of you on Facebook, please ignore - and certainly don't share or re-post - a warning that appears from time to time, about entering your PIN in reverse order to notify the police that you are in the process of being robbed at the ATM.

It has been around for a while, and 'rears its head' every now and then, and does the rounds again.

The information that it provides is false.  If you are in the situation it describes, it could be downright dangerous to try what it suggests, since your PIN will be rejected, which could aggravate your attacker.
Picture
Whenever I see a post such as this one, I immediately go to either the Snopes or Hoaxslayer website to check if it is known as a hoax.   Before re-posting or sharing such a hoax, it is a good idea to do the same thing - otherwise these hoaxes continue to proliferate.

See below links to the pages describing this particular hoax.

What happened to all the events in my Calendar?

Jackie R just popped in to iTandCoffee with a Calendar problem on her new iPhone 6 - not only were all her events missing from her calendar, any new calendar events she added disappeared as soon as they were added!  She was very concerned that here new iPhone had a fault.

  Solution

Jackie's events were quite safe and sound - even the new ones that she was adding WERE actually being added.  They just weren't being displayed, because she had accidentally told her Calendar App not to show the events from her main calendar

But how would she have done this?  And how could she 'undo' whatever she had done?

Step by Step Instructions:

You Calendar app can have one or more calendars within it, allowing you to 'categories' events of different types and, perhaps, share certain calendars of events with others.  For more information on setting up and sharing calendars, see
  • Handy Hint 69: Creating and using multiple calendars
  • Handy Hint 67: Sharing Calendars

(Note.  You must be an iTandCoffee Club member to view these two previous Handy Hints.)

If you tap on the word Calendar at the bottom centre of your screen, you will see a list of your available calendars pop up.  I have quite a few, but you may only have a couple (which may be the standard calendars created for you by Apple).

Just make sure that each of the calendars in the list that you wish to see on your Calendar is ticked.  If it is not, tap the calendar name to tick it - or just tap 'All iCloud' (if that is in your list) to tick all calendars that are in your iCloud.

Then, magically, your missing events will appear in your calendar again!
Picture
Picture
List of available calendars - ticks show which are being displayed in Calendar
If you don't want a certain calendar's events to appear in your Calendar, leave it unticked - but just make sure that, when you create a new event, you don't put it into that 'unticked' calendar.  If you do, it will appear to just 'disappear' immediately.

Need more information or further assistance with other Calendar issues?  Contact iTandCoffee on 1300 885 320.

Watch a video demonstration of enabling/disabling calendars - ▷ to play

In this demonstration, you will see what happens when the Calendars option at the bottom centre is tapped.  The 'Family' calendar is unticked, making the blue events on the right disappear.  When it is re-ticked, the blue events re-appear.  The 'School' calendar is then unticked, making the green event disappear.

What do you do when no-one knows the Restrictions passcode on an iPad, iPod Touch or iPhone

Picture
One of the mums who attended the iTandCoffee free morning tea this week found herself in an all too common situation.

She could not get into the 'Parental Controls' area of her family iPad because no-one in the family could remember the passcode to that area that has already been put in place some time ago.

A forgotten Restrictions passcode makes it impossible to look at and set up/change the parental controls that have already been set.

Depending on what restrictions are in place, inability to access and change restrictions can also greatly limit some capabilities of the iPad.

When there have already been multiple failed attempts to guess the Restrictions passcode, each new guess that failed then sets a longer and longer delay on when the passcode can be re-attempted.

Even a normal reset of the device is disabled until the Restrictions passcode is entered.

Of course, an important message here is that it is essential that, before you set up any Restrictions on an Apple device, you must be sure that you are not going to forget the passcode that you use.

A forgotten Restrictions password is a real problem as the only way to clear it is to perform a 'factory reset' using iTunes on a computer - which will wipe its contents.

Even if you have a backup of your device, you cannot just re-instate the device from backup if the backup itself also had the Restrictions passcode set at the time the backup was done!

If you only just set up the Restrictions passcode and have a backup from before that passcode was set, you can restore that backup after the factory reset  (which will mean losing whatever was new in the time since that backup was done).

If you don't have a backup that is free of the Restrictions passcode, you have to do the factory reset and the set up your device again - re-download all of your apps and re-do all your settings.

Any photos that you had on the device will be wiped when you do a factory reset, so make sure you import them to a computer before wiping the device.  After the reset, you could sync back any photos you want to put onto the device using iTunes (or perhaps the Photo Transfer app).  Any music would also need to be re-downloaded and re-sync'd.

Definitely not what most people will want to do - very drastic action to have to take when all you want to do is reset the Restrictions passcode!

iTandCoffee has a much easier solution

If you find yourself in the situation where you don't know the Restrictions passcode (or perhaps where a child in your family might have set it and then forgotten the code), iTandCoffee has a tool that should be able to extract the restrictions passcode from an iTunes backup of the device.

In the case of the mum who attended the iTandCoffee morning tea this week, this solved the problem - to the great relief of the children in the family, who were at risk of losing some of their precious games data!

Contact iTandCoffee for more information if you find yourself in this situation and need to retrieve your Restrictions passcode - 1300 885 420.

Have you noticed some web pages are slower to load lately?

For those of you who are noticing some poor response times with web browsing recently, check out this article from The Age.

An excerpt from an article today in The Age newsletter states

A submarine fibre-optic cable fault between Perth and Singapore could be why.
Australia's second largest DSL internet service provider iiNet is among a number of Australian providers affected by the issue that started on the SEA-ME-WE 3 cable on Sunday.
"Our link between Perth and Singapore is currently not passing traffic," an iiNet spokesman told Fairfax Media. "This traffic is taking an alternate path via Sydney to Hong Kong.
As a result, iiNet said customers may experience slower than expected download and upload speeds, latency and packet-loss to destinations in Asia.
