Did anyone else notice this recent change to Telstra Voicemail?

Picture
Image by Michael Schwarzenberger from Pixabay
I thought this one was something that arrived with iOS 14, but I am wondering if it is instead a change that Telstra has made recently (perhaps related to a plan change).

Has anyone else noticed a change in the Voicemail feature of their Phone app?

Previously, when I wanted to check my Voicemail, I had to go to the Voicemail option and tap the button in the middle of the screen to call the Voicemail service.

This magically changed very recently.

Client Nicola has asked a question about dealing with scam callers and how to block them.

Blocking a scam caller is easy on your iPhone - we'll walk through the steps below. But it is also handy to know that Apple has included a new feature for dealing with scam callers, one that many people will be keen to turn on. Read on for more details.

Why are there two copies of some photos on my iPhone?

Picture
Have you ever wondered why you get two versions of the same photo on your iPhone or iPad, even though you thought you had only taken one? Above is one that I took just now - identical, except that the second shows the letters HDR at top left.

Newer iPhones have a great Camera feature called HDR - High Dynamic Range - which can really enhance your photos in tricky  lighting situations.

An app we should all have on our mobile phones

Picture
Thanks Simone R for this suggestion for the iTandCoffee Newsletter, telling us about an app that we should all have on our smartphones

"I just completed my first aid refresher course today and they got us to download this app. It’s awesome, especially the locality guide which gives latitude & longitude numbers for your location; particularly good if you’re out bush or at the MCG apparently!!!"

How a client lost all her Contacts information

Picture
Just yesterday, I met with a client who had suffered a business disaster. The web developer who looked after hosting of her website and her mail had suffered a major cyber-attack, one that resulted in the loss of not only her complete website, but also all of her business mail.

Because her Mail account was installed as an IMAP style of mail account, one that synchronises across all devices, the loss of the mail by her mail host meant that she also lost the mail from the iPad and iPhone on which she relies for all her business communications.

While the loss of the email history is a disaster for her, even more of disaster is the loss of the contact information that was held in that mail.

How do I hang up an iPhone call?  Where is the red 'hang up' button?

This one is for you Dad!

A 'feature' introduced by one of the more recent updates/upgrades to iOS is that you sometimes find that, when you are ready to hang up from a call, your screen does not seem to show the red 'hang up' button.

Instead, your screen shows only your 'lock screen' image, with the name of the caller at the top.

My father, a newcomer to iPhone, found this very confusing when he wanted to hang up from an 'overseas' caller recently.

How do you get back the 'hang up' button so that you can hang up the call?

Just tap on the name of the caller at the top of the screen, and the usual set of 'call control' options will appear, including the red 'hang up button'.

Are your 'bursts' of photos causing your iPad, iPhone or Mac to 'burst its storage banks'?

Cleaning up bursts of Photos on the Mac, iPad and iPhone
Over the holiday break, I finally took some time to attempt to tidy up my Photos library, which is currently sitting at around 28,000 videos and photos.

When doing a clean out, the first area I look at is my Videos album - and get rid of anything that I don't need to keep.

But another area that can contain a large amount of wasted storage is the Bursts album - showing the sets of photos that were taken on your iPad or iPhone by holding down (instead of tapping) the white button in the Camera app.

By simply clearing out all the additional photos hidden by these bursts, I managed to claw back about 1GB of storage!

If you are not sure how to sort out all these hidden space wasters in Bursts, check out these members-only Handy Hints for iTandCoffee Club members:
  • Clearing out Bursts of Photos that are not needed on the iPhone and iPad

Discovering those hidden keys on the iPad and iPhone

Hidden keys on the iPad and iPhone
Have you ever wondered how to quickly access symbols like £ and ¢ on your iPad and iPhone keyboard?  Or how you can include a º sign when describing the temperature?

This was the first handy hint published by iTandCoffee, way back in August 2013.  So, it is about time it was updated to reflect the lastest iPad and iPhone screens.

iTandCoffee Club members can view this members-only Handy Hint here.  It includes a short video, as well as text instructions (for those who prefer that format).

(Some of you will notice that I have also removed that incredibly annoying music at the start and end of the video.  Seemed really clever at the time, but is now just plain annoying!)

If you are not yet a member of The iTandCoffee Club, find out more here.

Here's what to do if your iPhone 6S is unexpectedly shutting down

Picture
Macworld's recent edition included news of a battery replacement offer from Apple for anyone who has an iPhone 6S that is unexpectedly shutting down.

If you are suffering this problem, it would be worth visiting your local Apple Store and seeing if you qualify for this replacement.

I suspect you will have to make a Genius Bar appointment, but the article doesn't specifically say this.

Here is the article if you need further information: Apple offers new battery for iPhone 6s phones that suddenly shut down - Macworld Australia
