12/6/2021 0 Comments How do you export photos from Mac's Photos app to a folder, USB stick or external hard drive? This question comes up very regularly from Mac users. Just this week, I assisted a client who needed to get her photos downloaded from iCloud Photo Library without turning on iCloud Photo Library on her Mac. (Here's a separate article describing how to do this.)

In a recent newsletter, I talked about why I choose to use Safari instead of Chrome - most of the time.
If you do want or need to make Chrome your default browser, how do you tell your Mac to always open links in Chrome instead of Safari?
I am currently in the process of upgrading all of iTandCoffee's Introduction to the Mac book series, to include all the latest features and screens from macOS 11 Big Sur.
In the Backup, Apps and Preference book (part 3 of the series), I cover some great tips for using Safari. Here are a couple that are new in Big Sur. I have helped a couple of clients just this week who have had problems with the Mail app on their Mac - a problem that we were unable to solve because it seemed to relate to the out-of-date version of their Mac operating system.
Both clients were still using the 5-year-old Mac OS-X El Capitan. The Mail app was continually crashing, making it impossible to use. (Read more about this issue here). So we needed to upgrade their Mac operating system to a newer version - something that was worth doing for more reasons than just fixing this single app problem. There are lots of new features and fixes delivered by newer versions of the Mac operating system - and more problems are likely to arise in future from running a 'too old' version of the operating system. 8/11/2019 0 Comments Your Mac's content may not be secure if it is stolen - even if it is locked by a password
Every now and then, iTandCoffee sees a Mac user who does not know their Mac's main administrator password. This so often occurs when the Mac has been set up to automatically sign in without requiring entry of a password.
So often when I am working on my Mac, I quickly need to view my desktop - usually to find a file that I have saved there temporarily, or a screenshot that I just took.
I would write a handy hint on this one, but found a really good article this week that says it all - offering four different ways that you can quickly get to your desktop. Here's the link to this article.
At times, I find it necessary to convert some formatted text, HTML format text, or text with hyperlinks, into just plain text. This is most frequently when I have text that I have copied into a mail message (for example, from a web page) that has some strange formatting that I need to remove before sending.
In last week's newsletter, we included an article that described a quick solution to a poor Wi-Fi signal.
But does your Mac's Wi-Fi keep joining the wrong Wi-Fi network? If you live in an area that has Telstra Air - or have multiple Wi-Fi Access points or networks that you choose between - then you can find that your Mac seems to 'prefer' the wrong Wi-Fi connection and automatically joins that one. If this happens, your Mac looks like it is connected to Wi-Fi (and you therefore assume you should have internet), but you may find your internet slow or non-existent. This issue came up again last week, from a client who lives in Southbank (Melbourne) and finds that her Mac keeps joining Telstra Air ahead of her own Wi-Fi. In fixing the problem for this client, I noticed that Apple has provided a new setting in relation to 'remembered' Wi-Fi networks and whether these networks are 'auto-joined'. So I have updated this tip to reflect this new feature. Read on below. Apple has a great set of parental controls built in to the Mac. These controls allow you to restrict adult web content, set time restrictions on when and how long the child can use the Mac, and more.
As we have talked about in a previous blog article, it is essential to ensure that any Mac your child uses has two separate 'user accounts' - one for you as the parent (the Administrator) and another for the child/children. If your child's account is currently the only user account on the Mac, then you can't set up any parental controls. You need to resolve this first by setting up a 'parent/administrator' user account. This account can then be used to manage any other account on the Mac - including resetting or passwords if this is necessary. We have recorded a couple of tutorials on how to set up a separate accounts for the parent or child, and then how to set up the parental controls for the child's account. Just yesterday, I met with a client who had suffered a business disaster. The web developer who looked after hosting of her website and her mail had suffered a major cyber-attack, one that resulted in the loss of not only her complete website, but also all of her business mail.
Because her Mail account was installed as an IMAP style of mail account, one that synchronises across all devices, the loss of the mail by her mail host meant that she also lost the mail from the iPad and iPhone on which she relies for all her business communications. While the loss of the email history is a disaster for her, even more of disaster is the loss of the contact information that was held in that mail. |
