This week, I was looking back through some of our old Handy Hints - for hints that require updating due to changes in the latest version of iOS and iPadOS.
A couple of the early hints are still completely relevant, and well worth checking out. You will also get a 'blast from the past', seeing the old branding that applied back then - plus some really bad introduction music! Apple first introduced the ability to hide your email address in 2019, with a feature called Sign In with Apple.
This feature has been enhanced as part of iOS/iPadOS 15, making it a bit more more usable that under previous versions of iOS. It allows you to use a randomly generated email address when you register for a website account, or when you want to send an anonymous email - where that random email address is linked to, and will forward to, your existing iCloud email address. 27/6/2021 0 Comments How to add a link to some text in an email - in Mac Mail and Outlook for Windows or Mac
When you want to sent a hyperlink to a web page as part of an email, it is nice to be able to put some text like "Click here to view the article" instead of what might be a very long-winded URL (i.e. the address of the web page).
Let me explain what mean. As an example, I have an link to a web page that has an interesting article about Women in Technology, and I want to send this article to a friend. I could just copy and paste the following link into the email. https://timeline.com/women-pioneered-computer-programming-then-men-took-their-industry-over-c2959b822523?gi=e05845aed6d7. Alternatively, I can type the "Here is a good article about women in technology" and add a link behind the text so that it looks like this
Here is how to add the link to text in the email.
If you are a Gmail user, you will probably notice that, in the set of mailboxes you see for your Gmail account, there are mailboxes like All Mail and Important.
I regularly speak to clients who tell me that they don't want to see these extra mailboxes in their Mail, Outlook or Gmail apps on their computer or mobile devices. Here's how to get rid of them if you don't want to see them.
This topic has come up multiple times recently - how do you create a custom signature on the iPad or iPhone, in either Mail or Outlook.
In particular, how do you format the signature to include different fonts, sizes, colours, hyperlinks and an image or logo. This past fortnight has seen quite a focus on Mail, both through our Let's Talk About ... sessions and appointments with clients.
One of the key issues that I have dealt with multiple times recently is the issue of a Full Mailbox - where your allocation of storage, as provided by your Mail provider (eg. Telstra, Optus, Gmail), has been fully used up. As a result, you may no longer be able to send or receive any emails. I find that the two most common providers in discussions about full mailboxes are Telstra and Optus (with Gmail a distant third). So how do you check the storage of accounts like Optusnet, Telstra or Gmail, to see how much you have left? How do you clear out this storage? And how do you prevent it from filling up in future?

An iTandCoffee client was this week having a big problem with her Mail app on the Mac - where every time she opened Mail, it would immediately crash, making it un-usable.
There was such a quick fix for this problem, one that is worth filing away for future reference if you have an app that crashes when it is opened.
This question was asked this week by Club member Margaret B as part of a remote support appointment. I promised to included the answer in this week's newsletter, in case anyone else is having difficulty with this.
The questions was: How do you save an image that you receive in an email? In older versions of iOS, you used to have the Save Image/s option in the 'Reply' set of option. But that option is no longer there. So where is it? 25/11/2020 0 Comments Mac Mail is constantly crashingJust this week, iTandCoffee has assisted two different clients who had the same problem - that their Mac Mail app just constantly crashed. Every time they clicked the Inbox, the app would immediately close.
Both clients had the same operating system - OS-X El Capitan. Here's what we had to do to fix the problem. |
