I recently prepared a Photos slideshow on my Mac for a family occasion, and purchased a track ('What a wonderful world' by Lois Armstrong) to play with this slideshow.
Past experience has taught me that purchasing and downloading the track is the only way you can use it in your slideshow - that a subscription to Apple Music does not allow you to use that music. But after purchasing and downloading the track, I could not get the music to play with the slideshow. I tried on my iPad, but again found that the music would not play there either. Frustrating! I wondered if it was a glitch with the recent iOS/iPadOS 16 and macOS Ventura upgrades. It was when I did get it to work in Photos on my iOS 16 iPhone that I realised what was causing the issue.

25/11/2022 0 Comments Here's how I scanned boxes of old slides into my Photos library in no time flatI recently had to prepare a slideshow for our family, and had been sent a big box of old slides taken in the 60s and 70s - with the plan being to include these slides in the slideshow.
I don't have a scanner that caters for slides (they are quite expensive to buy) - so I used an amazing app to achieve wonderful results in very little time. In fact, it took far less time than if I had purchased a device to do the scanning. 7/10/2022 0 Comments Great new features of iOS 16 in Photos - Duplicates detection, a fancy feature for removing backgrounds, and moreOver the next few newsletters, we will be looking at the great new features of iOS 16, which arrived in September.
Last newsletter, we looked at the new Lock Screen and Wallpaper features. In this newsletter, we look at the Photos app - and I know one feature in particular will be very popular with those who love their photos. 18/8/2022 11 Comments If I use Apple Music, how can I add music to a Photos slideshow. None of my music appears!(This article was initially published in April 2017 and has been updated in August 2022 with further information about adding music to a slideshow when you are on an iPad or iPhone.)
When preparing a slideshow of photos last week, using the Photos app on the Mac, we were wanting to play a particular music track with that slideshow. This slideshow was just going to be shown to family as part of the celebration of the life of a loved one. It seemed that this should be an easy thing to do. We had completed the selection of photos for the slideshow and it was time to add the finishing touch - the music, a beautiful song by Ed Sheeran. Frustratingly, we found that when we tried choosing the iTunes track that we wanted to use, it was 'greyed' and not able to be selected
If you have an Android phone and a Mac, you will need an App if you want to transfer those photos to your Mac. (Note. If you use Google Photos, you can download your photos from there as another option. We'll just cover transferring using the app in this article.)
Here are the details of the app and the steps involved in transferring photos from your Android device to your Mac. iOS/iPadOS 16 is due out in Spring (probably September) 2022, and there are some features that I am really looking forward to.
Two of these features relate to the Photos app - and they are things that I know many people have been wanting for a long time, as the topics come up regularly in appointments at iTandCoffee. Those features are
Just this week, I ran a class for a local library on the topic of making a Family History book.
One of the topics we covered in that class is how you can scan hard copy pages and extract text from those pages - then use that text in a Word, Pages or Google Docs document. In talking about this, we looked at how you can also really easily extract text from photos that you already have of typed pages. iTandCoffee Club member Jeannette had an interesting problem. Her husband had spent a lot of time scanning old photos using a scanner and she had an external drive full of the files that he had created.
The problem was that the photos had scanned into PDF format, with multiple photos in each PDF. There were hundreds of these PDF files. She contacted iTandCoffee to find out if there was a quick way of exporting the photos from these PDF files into individual JPG files that she could then import to Photos. The good news is that her Mac provided an easy way of doing this in one hit. I have previously talked about how important it is to ensure that any old photos or scanned photos are given the correct (even if only approximate) Date Taken - so that they appear in your Photos app's timeline in the relevant year month. This ensures the they are able to be easily found later.
Something I just noticed - which I think is a relatively new feature - is that you can adjust the Date Taken for several photos at once. This could make a time-consuming task a lost quicker, if you have old photos that were taken around the same time. It is something that you always been able to do from the Mac (here's an article that talks about this), but only recently have you been able to do the same thing on iPad/iPhone. While I was just writing the handy hint about how to be paid using your mobile number instead of bank account number, I had to pixelate out my own bank account details in the images that I wanted to upload to show in the article.
Here's how I did that - it's so easy to do on both the Mac and iPhone/iPad. |
