I have a Personal Microsoft 365 account, so what can I do with Copilot?

Picture
In a separate article, I talk about Microsoft's large price increase for its Personal Microsoft 365 accounts - justified by Microsoft by highlighting the addition of (amongst other things) AI-powered tools like Co-Pilot.

As I mentioned in that article, I did pay increased subscription back in Dec 2024, not seeing any obvious option for 'opting out' of the new AI features. While I have now downgraded my subscription, this will not take effect until Dec 2025 when the subscription is next renewed.

In the meantime, I may as well make use of Copilot for the next few months - seeing as I am paying about $4/month to have it! Here's what I found when I had a play with it.
I started by downloading the Microsoft Copilot app on my Mac (and the same app on my iPhone/iPad).

Once I had done this, I was presented with a screen that had a message bar at the bottom, allowing me to ask my question of Copilot.

My first question (or Prompt) was "How can I use Copilot?" Here's what it said.
Picture
So I then thought that I might as well put it to work, asking it to write me a couple of articles. Below are the two prompts I used and the responses that I received, providing the suggested text for articles.

And I also asked Copilot to develop an exercise program. You'll see the result below, as the third prompt.

In the fourth prompt, I ask about how to make use of Copilot in Microsoft Word.

Of course, there is so much more it can do - for example, it can create a whole PowerPoint presentation for you based on a prompt!

If you have paid for Copilot as part of your Microsoft 365 subscription, why not make the most of it?

Prompt 1: "Write me an article about the benefits of copilot for people who have personal Microsoft accounts. Provide examples of uses for copilot that will help in everyday life."

Result:

Prompt 4: How can I use copilot in Microsoft Word?

Result:

Microsoft Word’s Copilot is designed to be your AI-powered assistant that helps you draft, edit, and refine your documents quickly and effectively. Here are some ways to leverage Copilot in Microsoft Word:

1. Getting Started
  • Ensure You Have the Right Subscription: Copilot is part of Microsoft 365’s premium, AI-enhanced features. Make sure your Office apps are up to date.
  • Accessing Copilot: Once enabled, you’ll see the Copilot icon or a dedicated pane in Word. This might appear as a sidebar or be integrated into the toolbar, depending on how your organization or personal subscription is set up.

2. Drafting and Editing Content
  • Generating a Draft: Ask Copilot to create a draft document by providing a prompt. For example, type, “Draft a project proposal for a new marketing initiative,” and Copilot will generate a structured draft for you.
  • Rewriting and Paraphrasing: Highlight a section of text and instruct Copilot to “rephrase this section” or “make this content more engaging.” You can get multiple variants so you can choose the one that best fits your tone.
  • Grammar and Style Suggestions: If you’re unsure about phrasing, ask Copilot to “check my document for grammatical errors” or “suggest improvements for clarity.” It offers edits that you can easily accept or modify.

3. Summarizing and Organizing
  • Summarize Long Documents: When working with lengthy reports or meeting minutes, you can ask, “Summarize my document” or “Give me the key points of this section,” which helps in quickly grasping essential information.
  • Creating Outlines: If you're getting started on a document, type a prompt such as “Outline a report on quarterly sales performance,” and Copilot will generate an outline to help organize your ideas.

4. Enhancing Creativity
  • Brainstorming Content: When you’re stuck for ideas, ask Copilot, “Give me creative ideas for a blog post on sustainable living,” and review the suggestions for inspiration.
  • Formatting Assistance: Ask for help with document formatting or layout adjustments by saying things like, “Adjust the formatting so the document looks professional,” and Copilot can suggest or even automatically adjust styles, headings, and spacing.

5. Workflow Integration
  • Integrate with Other Microsoft 365 Apps: Copilot can pull data from Excel, insights from Outlook, and more. For instance, if you have data in an Excel spreadsheet, you might ask, “Create a summary report in Word using my latest sales data,” and Copilot can help bridge the gap between applications.
  • Interactive Commands: You can use natural language commands directly in your document. Experiment with prompts like “Draft an introduction for this report” or “Create a conclusion that recaps the main points” to see how Copilot supports your writing process.

6. Tips for Maximizing Copilot’s Value
  • Experiment With Prompts: The quality of output improves with clear, detailed prompts. The more context you provide, the better Copilot tailors its responses.
  • Review and Edit: While Copilot is a powerful tool, it works best as a collaborator. Always review, revise, or refine its suggestions to make sure the content truly aligns with your voice and intent.
  • Keep Learning: As you use Copilot more often, you'll become familiar with the types of commands that yield the best results. Don’t hesitate to try new queries to see how it can adapt to your specific needs.
