This week saw another iTandCoffee client with unwanted MacKeeper files on her computer. When Malwarebytes was run to detect any malware resident on her computer, it popped up with several items relating to MacKeeper - even though MacKeeper had been removed from the computer at some point in the past. Co-incidentally, I received a newsletter from MacWorld on the same day, with an article that outlines how to full remove MacKeeper from you computer. So, for anyone who might be interested in how to FULLY remove MacKeeper from their Mac, here is the MacWorld article.

A great feature of Apple's Health app on the iPhone (and iPod Touch) is its ability to track and report the steps you take during any given day. Even if you don't wear a Fitbit, Apple Watch or some other fitness tracker, the Health app can still show the steps that you took when the iPhone was with you. When my husband and I travelled in 2015, I loved this feature of my iPhone 6 Plus, which I had with me during all those vast kms of sight-seeing! I could see how many steps I'd taken, how many flights of stairs I'd climbed, how much energy I had burned and more. (I now have an Apple Watch, so my steps are tracked even when I don't have my iPhone.) But is every iPhone model capable of tracking the steps you take while carrying the iPhone? This was a question raised at the Free Friday at iTandCoffee on 10/2/17 (for iTandCoffee Club members). One of the attendees could not work out how to make her iPhone track the steps she took while the iPhone was with her. She had an iPhone 5 or iPhone 5C. This is actually a limitation of older iPhones - those that are older than the iPhone 5S. These older models do not have the motion sensor that is built into newer iPhones, so they are unable to record steps. This particular iTandCoffee Club member would need to wear a fitness tracking device of some sort if she wishes to utilise the tracking features of the Health app on her iPhone. If a third-party fitness tracker (and associated app) is used to track your steps, make sure to grant that app access to your Health app. This is done in Settings ->Privacy->Health (on older devices) and in Settings -> Privacy -> Motion and Fitness (on newer devices). In that Privacy option, turn on the relevant apps and features. For anyone that makes use of public WiFi networks at cafes and restaurants, shopping centres, airports, hotels or elsewhere, you really do need to be sure that you are not exposing your passwords and private details to others that may be on that network - people who 'camp out' on the network looking for unsecured communications over the internet. The Age published a good article on this topic this week. Here it is: Related Handy Hints and ArticlesHave you ever written a Microsoft Word document that has 'footnotes' or 'endnotes' in it? A client of iTandCoffee is currently writing a book and had found that her 'endnote' references throughout the document had mixed, incorrect formatting. Some were not even superscripts, so were hard to distinguish from the text that they were referencing. To illustrate this problem, I have included an example I mocked up, in the image shown here. The question is: How do you change such formatting issues in these footnote or endnote references throughout the document, without having to go and change each and every one? One might have thought that changing the style associated with the endnote reference might have fixed the problem. But it didn't. Instead, an advanced 'Find and Replace' was required - the instructions for which can be found here. Does your iPhone or iPad pop up all sorts of messages - many that you don't want? A client of iTandCoffee this week found that he could not arrange his Visa for a visit to Myanmar because Google Chrome on his Windows computer was blocking, and the site needed these popups to be enabled.
To assist this client, I prepared the following set of instructions that give the steps to follow in Chrome to enable popups for a specific site like this. Here they are: 1. Select the 'three dots' at top right (see below image) If you are considering purchasing an iPhone (or other type of smartphone or tablet) online, first read this story. A long-term client of iTandCoffee visited before Christmas because she was having trouble with her iPhone 6 Plus, one that she had purchased on eBay a couple of months earlier. It had been 'glitchy' ever since she got it - the fingerprint sensor would not work, the mute switch did not mute, 'Selfie' photos had a shadow on them, charging took more than 24 hours and the charge lasted far less than 24 hours. When she came to iTandCoffee, the iPhone was at the point where it would no longer turn on. In looking at the iPhone, there were several things that struck me as strange just viewing the iPhone.
At the time it initially arrived, she did think it strange that it came with with only a UK power adaptor. But she certainly didn't expect it to be a fake. When she subsequently contacted the seller via eBay to complain and ask for her money back, they finally contacted her in return and told her to log into her iCloud account (at appleid.apple.com) and remove the iPhone from the list of devices associated with her iCloud. They said that, once she confirmed she had done this, they would then send her their return address details, so that she could return the phone for a refund. Suspecting she would simply lose the phone and not get a refund if she returned it, she contacted Apple Support, who were very helpful. They looked into the seller and advised that there are lots of complaints about dodgy/fake phones and that the seller. They suggested that the seller most likely wanted the device free of links to iCloud, so that they could simply sell it it another unsuspecting victim when she returned it. So she is now keeping the phone as evidence and will pursue the matter further through Paypal, to see if she can get her money back. For anyone who has a device that they worry may be fake, here is an article that outlines what to look for: A great feature of the iPhone and iPad (and Macs) is the 'Find my iPhone' (or iPad or Mac) feature of iCloud. By turning on the 'Find my iPhone' switch in Settings -> iCloud on the iPhone or iPad, or in System Preferences->iCloud on the Mac, you can usually find a mislaid, lost or stolen device from another of Apple device, or from any computer's web browser. Here is a handy hint previously published on this topic. But what happens if your battery has gone flat on the missing device. Can the device still be found? Well, this depends on whether you have enabled a particular setting on your iPhone or iPad - one that sends the last location of the device before the battery died. If this location has been sent, Find my iPhone can show this last known location. It is worth checking today if you have enabled this useful setting. Go to Settings -> iCloud on the device, tap on the Find my iPhone option, and make sure Send Last Location is turned On (ie. it is green). 2/2/2017 1 Comment It's time to organise those student concession passes for public transport - here's an app for creating ID photos easily! It's that time again - time to fill forms at the start of our kids' school year and, in some cases, time to organise those ID photos for things like the PT Victoria student concession MYKI's. If you have had a passport photo done lately, you will know how expensive they are, especially if you need to get them for several members of our family. In cases like the student concession forms, a do-it-yourself photo will suffice. The challenge is making the photo the right size, to suit the form on which it is to be stuck. For the past 3 years, I have made use of a couple of really handy apps that make this so easy. Here is the one that I used this year - it is called 'Passport Photo'. If you have a favourite app for taking such photos, leave a comment below to let us know which one you prefer. Handy Hints and Articles about Apps
There is a feature on the the Mac that I use so many times a day. It allows me to create a PDF file from any type of file, for a mail message, for a web page, a set of photos - for anything that I could otherwise print. Even better, it allows me to only include certain pages from a file in the PDF - rather than the whole file - or to perhaps create a PDF that shows two (or more) pages per page. Find out about this great feature in this week's Handy Hint for Mac users, for members of The iTandCoffee Club. It is an extract from one of the user guides in the 'Getting to know your Mac Series' - available for purchase from the iTandCoffee Online Store. Not yet a member? Why not Join the Club today - and beat our upcoming price rise for membership. It's only $30/year. Want to learn more about your Mac computer?
