It's time for another update to your iPad, iPhone and Mac - and this one is important!

Picture
It's iOS and MacOS (or OS X) update time again!

Apple has released important updates to all its operating systems for iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, Mac, Apple TV and Apple Watch.  It contains a security patch that we should all install as soon as possible.

The update blocks a potential vulnerability that could leave devices open to attack via the Wi-Fi chip in the device (as well as fixing some other 'bugs').
Known as Broadpwn, the bug affects the Wi-Fi chips found in both Android and Apple smartphones and allows an attacker to take over a device remotely while it searches for Wi-Fi.

“An attacker within range may be able to execute arbitrary code on the Wi-Fi chip,” Apple wrote on its blog.

news.com.au
How to apply the update

For instructions on how to update your Apple devices, see this article from Macworld.
  • Apple releases iOS 10.3.3, macOS Sierra 10.12.6 and watchOS 3.2.3 updates - Macworld Australia
Should you Update?

This may be the last iOS 10 update (with iOS 11 due for delivery in spring).  If you have a device that is not going to be eligible for upgrade to iOS 11, this may be the iOS version that you are stuck with forever!
  • Here are the devices that can/can't be upgraded to iOS 11 (from ComputerWorld).
There are some reported shortcomings of this release, which need to be weighed up against the advantages of applying the security patch on older devices.
  • Apple iOS 10.3.3 Bugs and problems with Safari, Mail and Music | Forbes
What if your device won't allow you to update?

Something to keep in mind if you have an older iPhone that is 'stuck' forever on iOS 9 is that you won't be able to update your device to 'patch' this security vulnerability.

This could leave your device open to attack when it is searching for a Wi-Fi network.  It might be time to think about an upgrade to that old phone (or at least leaving your Wi-Fi turned off unless you really need to use it).

Some features that I like in iOS 9.3, released today (22/3/6)

Picture
Overnight last night (early Tues 22/3), Apple hosted another of its 'Town Hall Meetings' to announce some new products and an update to iOS - iOS 9.3.

iOS 9.3 has some quite a few handy features - a few really stood out for me:
  • You can now sort Notes alphabetically - something that so many people have had on their wish list for as long as Notes has been around!
  • Notes can now be password protected
  • Your PDF Collections in iBooks will now be able to sync with all devices.
  • "Improved download performance of full size photos or videos stored in iCloud Photo Library" - I am hoping this means that there won't be the appalling delay in downloading my photos.
  • The new 'Night Shift' feature to automatically adjust your i-Device display to the 'warmer' colour spectrum at night, to avoid sleep disruption.  If you have one of the older iPhones or iPads (earlier than iPhone 5S, or earlier than iPad Mini 2, iPad Air), this feature will not be available.

The full list of updates and fixes

Here is an Evernote Note that shows the content of this software update (as compiled from screenshots of my iPad screen before updating).

And here is a Macworld Article describing iOS 9.3:
  • iOS 9.3 is ready to install with Night Shift, password-protected Notes, and more

Is it safe to download?

For anyone who is wondering whether it is safe to proceed with this download, I would suggest that you can go ahead.

I have been using it for the last few days without any problems, and have not heard of any significant issues.

As with any update to iOS, make sure you have a backup before you update.  If you run into any problems, this article might help you resolve them:

Need Help?

Of course, if you need assistance with this download and installation - or perhaps don't have enough data allowance to download the required file - contact iTandCoffee on 1300 885 320 or at enquiry@itandcoffee.com.au.
