My Mac's date and time is wrong - and even when reset, it keeps reverting to incorrect time

This particular problem happened to me as well.

A client contacted iTandCoffee because her relatively recent Mac suddenly couldn't access all sorts of things. The cause of the problem was that the Mac's date was incorrect - set to a date several years ago.

Here's how we fixed it.

How to show the size of message in Mac Mail and then sort by this size

When doing a cleanup of your Mail - especially where your Mailbox is too full - it is useful to first identify mail messages that are large, and focus on deleting these message first.

But you might find when viewing that Mail app on the Mac that you don't see each message's size, making it hard to do this.

Here's how to resolve this.

I confess to being a very regular user of Apple Maps. And one of the features of Maps that is quite handy is the ability to set up a list of places that you visit regularly.

By doing this, you can quickly lookup travel time, route options and directions, and traffic conditions.

Beware of myGov scam emails

Yet another scam email in my Inbox today.

This one caught my eye, because I know a lot of people might fall for it and give away their myGov login details.

There are lots of variations on this theme, in terms of scam emails that pretend to be from the ATO or myGov - so please be on guard.

When I send an email to multiple recipients, those sent to Google recipients are rejected

In recent months, I have been called on to assist numerous small business clients who have suddenly found that their emails - especially bulk emails - are rejected by certain recipients.

The common theme with the rejections is that the rejecting recipients all tend to be Google email addresses, and the sender is using Microsoft Exchange. (Although I did also have a client who was also having trouble sending to iCloud email recipients.)

Here's what was causing their issue, and what we did we did to fix the problem.

Uncovering and clearing some hidden space wasters on the iPhone and iPad

While I was preparing a recent session about the new features iOS/iPadOS 17, I was checking out a range of new features/settings. While I was looking at one in particular, I tapped on another nearby option and was surprised by what I saw.

There was a place in Settings where I could see some real space wasters that are stored on my iPhone - and it wasn't in the usual place that I would have checked this (i.e. Settings -> General -> iPhone Storage).

It showed how I could quickly clear 2GB of data - an amount that could be critical for those who have limited storage on their device.

How to check and manage what is starting up every time your Mac starts

A common iTandCoffee appointment with computer users is one where I am asked ‘why is my computer so slow’.

One of the first things that I check when trying to improve the performance of any computer is the ‘startup’ list of apps and processes - and I turn off any apps and processes that don’t need to start up every time the computer starts up (or the user logs in).

Asking Siri how far you have walked today - and how to make this work!

One of the features announced late last year for iPhones, iPads and Apple Watches is the ability for Siri to access 'on-device' Health data.

What does this mean?

You can now ask Siri to record certain Health Data, or to tell you certain information from Health. Your device uses 'on-device' data, so does not access to internet to process your Siri instruction.

Here are some examples of questions you can ask:

How far have I walked today?
How far did I walk last month
How many steps did I take today
What is my heart rate

If you record certain Health data, here are some example Siri commands to do this for you:

My weight today is 65 kilograms
My blood pressure is ... over ...

I was really keen to use this new feature when it arrived, but couldn't get it to work at all - on either the Watch or on my iPhone or iPad. Online instructions on how to enable this feature did not seem to help.

Yesterday, I finally found the solution, and got it working. But it was quite an obscure one!
