Do you wish you still had a sidebar in the Mac Photos app?  Well, you do!

Picture
Many clients that I see are very frustrated by the 'minimalistic' design of the new Photos app on the Mac (which replaced the iPhoto app during 2015).

If you find yourself longing for a left-hand sidebar - like the one you had in iPhoto - there is good news.

The sidebar has not been taken away from you.  It is just hidden unless you say that you want to see it.

This week's handy hint for Mac users tells you how you can turn on this sidebar.

If you are an iTandCoffee Club member, you can this tip here:
How to enable the 'Sidebar' in the Photos app.

The new 'split view' feature on your Mac

Picture
How often do you find that, when working on your Mac, you want to view two separate windows or apps side by side.

So, you have dragged and resized your windows to achieve this.

Under OSX 10.11 El Capitan, this is made so much easier - with a new feature called 'split view'.

Find out more about this feature in this Handy Hint for iTandCoffee Club members.

This tip includes a video of this new feature in action, recorded as I created this article.

Yet another update, this time for Mac - OS X El Capitan is now available

Picture
It's been a busy few weeks at Apple.

Not only has Apple updated and twice patched the operating system for its mobile devices (iOS 9, 9.01 and 9.0.2), it has now released the new operating system for Mac, OS X 10.11 El Capitan (replacing OS 10.10 Yosemite).

I have not yet had a chance to test drive this new operating system on my Mac, as the download is still in progress!  I think Apple's servers might be a bit slow at the moment due to demand for the new software upgrades.

Here is an article from MacWorld, published yesterday, which gives an overview of the great features in store when my upgrade finally downloads and installs!

OS X El Capitan now available as a free update - Macworld Australia - Macworld Australia
For those of you more cautious than me (which I highly recommend you be!), wait a while for this new version to 'bed down' and problems to be resolved before taking the risk of upgrading.

And ABSOLUTELY make sure you have a valid backup before applying this upgrade.

If you need help with the upgrade or ensuring you have a backup, please contact iTandCoffee on 1300 885 420 or enquiry@itandcoffee.com.au

Goodbye Yosemite, Hello El Capitan - a new version of OS X for Mac

Just to cap off the list of changes for us Apple-ified households, Apple will also be delivering a new version of the OS X operating system for Macs on September 30th.

OS X 10.11 has been named El Capitan.

It does not include a huge number of stand-out new features - it is more of a 'tweak' upgrade, and introduces the new improved Notes app.  I've included a MacWorld article at the bottom for those of you who want to find out more about this upgrade.

Here's the list of Macs that El Capitan will run on.
  • iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
  • MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
  • MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
  • MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
  • Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
  • Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
