At the Photos on the Mac class series run recently by iTandCoffee, an attendee at these online classes wanted to know how to get photos onto her Mac from her Android device.
Here's the answer to that question.

21/6/2020 0 Comments Quickly deleting files, folders and photos on the Mac - and how to delete characters to the right of your cursor positionWe recently ran the Getting to Know your Mac class series online using Zoom, over 4 weeks in May/June 2020. Everyone who attended found the online format even better than the 'in person' option - so we will continue running such classes online for the foreseeable future.
One of the common questions asked during this class series relates to deleting files and folders - whether there is quick way to delete files, one that avoids having to drag the file/folder to the trash can at bottom right! Just hitting the delete key on the keyboard doesn't allow such deletion. Another common question is about how to delete characters to the right on Mac given that, unlike with a Windows keyboard, there are not separate keys for 'backspace' and 'delete'. There is only the delete key, which deletes text to the left. One of the tips we covered in the Exploring some amazing hidden Secrets of the iPad and iPhone PTT session recently was about a recent change to the iPad that now allows your Home Screen to include the 'Today' view - showing you information from key apps that you select, such as weather, calendar, news or any other app that provides a 'widget' for inclusion in the Today view.
At our PTT session called Organising Photos on a Windows Computer held on Friday 20/6, we looked at the Photos app on a Windows computer, for finding photos wherever they 'live' on your computer and allowing you to see them on a timeline, group photos by person using facial recognition, create your own albums and more.
One of the questions that came up was about old photos that you have scanned and imported to your computer. The date associated with these photos is the date scanned so these photos won't appear in the right place on the timeline. Is there a way to adjust this date? During the past week, I was asked to take a look at a small business client's Windows computer, which was very slow in opening Word and Excel documents. She wondered if it was time to look at getting a new PC, given that her current computer was several years old.
For appointments such as this, I always go through a series of checks to look for obvious things that may be chewing up processing capacity and memory on the computer. Here's a Microsoft support article that provides a great list of these things that you can look at yourself if your own computer is a bit on the slow side. Client France O is doing her PHD, and has been told by the IT people at the university the she needs to use Google Chrome instead of Safari.
While Safari works perfectly well for nearly everything, I do find that there is the very occasional need to utilise Chrome. A good example for our own family recently was in using Google Meet for parent/teacher interviews. We encountered problems with video freezing if we joined the Google Meet using Safari, but had no such issues with Chrome. Usually it is just a matter of adjusting Preferences and Security settings in Safari, but sometimes it is that the website/service just doesn't work with anything but Chrome! So, for a case like Frances, how do you tell your Mac to always open links in Chrome instead of Safari? A client this week was very puzzled to find that, whenever she used a recommended scanning app to scan a document using her iPhone (as covered by the PTT session video 'Ditch that Scanner'), the Mail option within that app seemed to create a draft email with an image of her document instead of a PDF - even though she had selected the 'PDF' format option in the scanning app.
She contacted iTandCoffee to find out how to force the scan to be sent as a PDF instead of image. This is one that I get asked about regularly by Apple device users. I was asked recently to assist a client with downloading a YouTube video for embedding in a Powerpoint presentation.
(It should be noted that the downloading of YouTube videos is only legal if it is your own video, or you have permission from the owner of the video.) When I need to download any YouTube videos, I use an excellent app that is available as a free app in the App Store on the iPhone and iPad. |
