This week's Handy Hint is courtesy MacWorld!

I wanted to do a handy hint that provides some great tips for using Siri.  Well, MacWorld has this week published an excellent article and video on this very topic!  So I figure 'why reinvent the wheel'!

Check out this MacWorld article for 16 of the best things that Siri can do for you.  It includes written instructions and a really good video.  Just excuse the ad at the start!

Do you have an iPhone 5 with a faulty Sleep/Wake button?

This seems to apply to iPhone 5's, not the newer iPhone 5C or 5S.  If you are having any problems with the sleep/wake switch on you iPhone 5, check out this article.

If you don't yet have a password keeper on your i-Device ...

If I hadn't already invested my time and money in Onesafe as a password keeper for my iPad, iPhone and Mac, I would certainly by purchasing 1Password instead.  It gets such great reviews and looks really good.

If you don't already have a password keeper, why not consider getting 1Password now.  I 'scooped' the below article last week - why not have a read and decide if it is the app for you?!

Are you wondering whether to subscribe to Office 365?

I think I am going to wait for now.  I have Office 2011 on my Macs, one of which is a Macbook Air which goes with me whenever I need to use Word, Powerpoint or Excel.

Using Dropbox, I can already view all my important files from my iPad and iPhone.  Mail allows you to read MS Office documents as well.  I haven't yet had the need to edit the MS Office files from my iPad.

I will sign up one day soon, just so I can help my clients with their use of Office 365.  But otherwise, I would not spend the $100/year to have an edit capability that I would rarely use.

Have a read of this article that I have 'scooped', which outlines some reasons why you would and perhaps wouldn't subscribe.
When should you buy an Office 365 subscription?

Mother Geek's app suggestion:  A great app for tracking data usage on your iPad and iPhone

This is an app that I have downloaded this week to my iPad Mini.

My Mini has a 500MB/month Telstra SIM card in it.  I need to keep a close eye on my cellular usage with this SIM, as it is part of my Telstra Home Bundle and they will charge me excess data if I go over the 500MB limit - something I worry that I could easily do when I am out and about working, and using cellular data on that iPad.
I love the fact that DataMan shows me the percent usage on the App's 'badge' on the Home Screen - so I don't even have to open it to see where I am up to with my usage.  And it will pop up with warnings when I reach certain % limits - which I can define.

So if you are concerned about tracking your up-to-the-minute data usage, check out this app.

There is a version for iPad, which is $6.29, and a cheaper version for iPhone and iPad that is $2.49.    This cheaper version doesn't allow you to put the 'badge' on the app to show your current % usage, but is still very handy.

I am very glad that I just installed the cheaper verion on my iPhone, as I discovered that my phone's cellular usage is a little out of control for the month!  I accidentally had my Personal Hotspot turned on when I connected my iPhone to my Mac computer, which caused my Mac to 'tether' itself to my phone (thereby overriding the usual WiFi connection).  The work I was then doing with Dropbox (and some big files) was then using my cellular instead of WiFi.  OW!

DataMan also shows the WiFi data usage by your device on a day-by-day basis during your billing cycle - something that I need on each person's iPad and iPhone in this household at the moment, as we are tracking very close to our monthly 500GB limit this month!!!

Do you have Apple products that you would love to upgrade?

I am someone who loves to be up to date with my Apple products and, while I have loved my iPad Mini purchased in Nov 2012, it is the older version of the Mini and not the beautiful 'retina display' version that came out last year.  I longed to upgrade, but just couldn't justify this when my mini was working so well.

I recently saw an article about a new service called mResell (see below article that I 'Scooped' to my Scoop.it page), where you can sell your old Apple products and buy refurbished products.
Well, I have just visited mResell to see how much I would get for my iPad Mini.  I was really pleasantly surprised to see that they would pay me $221 for it!  Not bad when I paid around $360 for it 18 months ago!

So I have sold it to them!

mResell is going send me something now that allows me to just take my Mini to the Post Office, for it to be shipped to them for free.
Picture
Once they receive it, the money they have agreed to pay will go straight into my bank account.  So easy!

I then got all excited and thought "why not sell all my other old iPads" - we have iPad 1's and 2's that really need updating.  Well, not so good with these!  They would not pay me anything for these devices - they are just too outdated now!  But that's OK - I love having my old iPad 1 on the kitchen bench, showing my Calendar and Contacts, and allowing me to look up recipes.

Handy Hint 44 - A great way of reading and sharing Safari web pages

Picture
Today, we are going to go with a written handy hint instead of a video!

This one is a great hint about Safari on your iPad.

It comes directly from the 'Going On Safari' session notes - just one of the many session topics included in the 'Getting to know your iPad and iPhone' series.

Click on the image on the right to view these pages from the document, and to read about a great feature in your iPad's Safari app called 'Reader'.   You may not have even realised it is there!

Are you interested in seeing the full version of this document?  (The index of topics covered by the full document is included with the handy hint.)

iTea&Coffee is giving away 5 free copies of this really useful and informative 52-page document. Just be one of the first 5 people to respond to the below very quick survey to receive your link to download.  Even if you don't want a copy of this document, please let us know your preference for the format for future Handy Hints.

The myth about closing your iPad and iPhone apps regularly ...

Have you been told by the kids or grandkids (or someone who is used to working on a computer) that you need to 'close' your iPhone and iPad apps on a regular basis to save your battery's life?

I see so many clients who proudly show me this piece of wisdom that has been shared with them - they religiously visit the task switcher on a regular basis and close off any apps to ensure that there are few or no apps listed.

Well, relax - you don't need to do this any more!

Mose apps are effectively 'closed' the minute you hit the Home button to return to your Home Screen, or when you use your task switcher to switch to another App.
The exception is those apps that have a feature called 'Background App Refresh'.  This feature was introduced in iOS 7.
Picture
Picture

The idea of this feature is that some apps can refresh themselves in the background - for example, downloading updates and new content regularly, or keeping track of your location so that location-based information can be available when you switch back.

You can see what apps can use this feature in your Settings - go to
Settings -> Background App Refresh.

The Background App Refresh option allows you to decide which apps are allowed to use this feature.

While it is true that apps that use Background App Refresh do make use of your battery to do their refreshes, your devices are clever enough to work out your patterns of use and only update at the most efficient times and not bother updating when the device is not being used.
So, your best bet to ensure that you maximise your battery life is just to check the list of apps that are refreshing in background, and turn off those that don't need to use this feature.

Just be careful about turning off Background App Refresh for those apps that need to be doing 'stuff' even when they are not currently active.  If you close an app by dragging it upwards when you are in the task switcher/multitasking view, you will be stopping it from carrying out its background activities (for example such as tracking your location or responding to VoIP calls), until you relaunch it.

When your photos are clogging up your iPhone or iPad ...

Well, the theme for iTea&Coffee clients this week seemed to be iCloud backups and how to 'fit' your i-Device's backup into the 5GB that you get from Apple for free.

In nearly every case, it is the Camera Roll on the device that is the problem - often thousands of photos taking up multiple gigabytes of the device's storage.

In many cases, these photos are already being automatically backed up to a computer by iCloud, or are being manually transferred regularly to a computer.  But most of us are reluctant to remove our photos from our i-Devices and want to keep that camera roll backed up - just in case!
Picture
Well, there are some great alternatives to iCloud backups for your photos - and they are definitely cheaper than Apple's additional iCloud storage options.  Here are some of the alternatives and their comparative pricing ...
  • iCloud (Apple): Free 5GB;   Paid starts at $21/year for an extra 10GB; $42/year for an extra 50GB
  • Dropbox:  Free: 2GB (but you can 'earn' up to 16GB free);   Paid starts at US$9.99/month for 100GB
  • OneDrive (Microsoft):   Free 7GB;  Paid starts at US$25/year for 57GB; US$50/yr for 100GB
  • Google+ (Google):  Free: 15GB;   Paid starts at only US$1.99/month for 100GB
  • Cloud Drive (Amazon):   Free 5GB;   Paid starts at US$10/year for 20GB, US$50/year for 100GB

So if your iCloud backup is bursting at the seams, why not set your photos to back up to one of these 'clouds', and turn off your iCloud backup of your Camera Roll.

iTea&Coffee can help with all this if it all sounds too complicated or if you're just not sure how to get it all workings - call 1300 885 420 or email enquiry@itandcoffee.com.au.

Check out this recent article from The Age, which looks at the pros and cons of some of these services for backing up your photos.
