A Peculiar Problem with the Reminders app

(Contributed by Andrew Coulston)
Picture
Earlier this week, whilst working on a new iPad/iPhone guide (one of the many written by iTandCoffee and available here), I stumbled across what appears to be quite a peculiar problem in iOS 11.2.5.  It seems that there is a glitch in the Reminders app, impacting the (usually) really handy Remind me at a location feature.

If you iPhone is slow lately, download this app to see if you have been 'throttled' by Apple

Picture
There has been such a lot of publicity lately about Apple deliberately slowing older devices after a recent iOS 11 update, so that many iPhone 6's, 6S's and 7's are noticeably - and often frustratingly - slower. It has been dubbed 'battery-gate' - and daughter number 2 in this household is one such frustrated iPhone 6 user.

Why your emails sometimes disappear unexpectedly

Picture
Have you ever noticed that you seem to lose emails that you don't remember ever deleting on your iPad iPhone? Perhaps, when you go searching for them, you find them in the 'bin' mailbox and wonder how they got there?

This may be due to a setting on your iPad or iPhone, one which results in the deletion of several emails when you think you are just deleting one.

Find out more about this setting, and how to ensure that you only delete intended emails, in this week's handy hint.

Those Apple updates keep coming, with more this week for iPhone, iPad & Mac

Picture
It feels like it wouldn't be a fortnightly iTandCoffee newsletter without news of another software update to iPads, iPhones and Macs.  Wednesday morning (24/1) saw the arrival of iOS 11.2.5. The last update was 11.2.2, so who knows where 11.2.3 and 11.2.4 got to!

A bit later in the week, MacOS 10.13.3 was also released with security patches and a fix for the Messages app (to fix out of order conversations).

A look at the iOS update

I have been using iOS 11.2.5 since Wednesday with no detrimental effects and have not seen any negative reports online, so it appears safe to install. As always, make sure you do a backup first!

iOS 11.2.5 heralds the imminent launch of Apple's HomePod - a new product to rival (and, says Apple, to outclass) Google Home and Amazon Echo.

Who is your doppleganger in the world of art? Here's a fun way to find out ...

Here's a fun little exercise for you.

Google's Arts & Culture app (which can be downloaded to your iPad or iPhone using the link here) lets you take a 'selfie', and will then use this selfie to tell you what portraits in museums offer the closest match to your own features.

Here is an article I found about this:
  • Australians can now find out if their 'portrait' is in an art museum, thanks to Google

I downloaded the app and tried it out myself - multiple times, hoping to get a result that was slightly more attractive! It kept coming up with the same portrait.

Apparently, the photo shown here is the painting that shows the closest resemblance to my selfie (but only a 56% match).

Not sure what I think about that!  I'm not going to show you the 'selfie' that I took - it's as bad as most selfies of a 50-something woman!

When you have a problem with your Wi-Fi or device, check if this is the real problem ...

Picture
As I write this article, we are once again suffering an internet service outage at our address.

Barely a day goes by where I don’t find myself checking the Telstra Outages web page at https://outages.telstra.com/#, only to find that - YES - there IS yet another outage affecting our service.

Invariably, it is the same ol’ cause - An issue in the nbn network causing a disruption to our cable internet service, with no estimate of a date for resolution.

This has been happening at both our home and work addresses (both serviced by cable) for MONTHS, resulting in slow speed, 'flakey' connections and, at times, full outages.

The Australia Day weekend signals 'back to school' for so many of us.

Taking a good look at the changes to the App Store app on the iPad and iPhone

Picture

If you have upgraded to iOS 11, one of the apps that you will have noticed as having gone a major overhaul is the App Store app.

Frustratingly, this app is now quite different to the other 'store' apps on the iPad and iPhone, and takes a bit of getting used to.

Things like Top Charts and Categories are no longer where they used to be, and the way you find your Purchased apps, redeem iTunes cards and view your iTunes sign-in details have all changed.

Join us on February 1st to 'Be Connected'

Picture
iTandCoffee Joins the Be Connected Network

There’s never been a better time to be online.

Be Connected is an Australian Government initiative aimed at increasing the confidence, skills and online safety of older Australians when they use the internet and everyday technology.

Older Australians with low internet skills can often feel isolated from their community and family at a time in their lives when feeling connected is increasingly important.

Be Connected aims to change that through a family and community centred approach; it will help older Australians to realise the value of being connected online and provide access to appropriate training and support in a safe and familiar environment.

Launched in early October 2017, the Be Connected initiative delivers a range of resources specifically designed to support these Australians via:
  • A dedicated website with information and interactive training tools and resources for older Australians, their families and peers, and local community organisations.
  • Free access to personalised face to face help and support through the Be Connected Partner Network, which now includes iTandCoffee!
As a Be Connected Network Partner, iTandCoffee will be supporting older Australians learning the basics of how to connect online, including how to:
  • use a digital device
  • be safe online
  • send emails
  • get started on Facebook and other social media
  • shop online
  • share holiday photos with family, and much more.

We’re very excited to be accepted as a Be Connected Network Partner and look forward to introducing new clients to iTandCoffee’s unique offering of Technology Lifestyle Courses and our patient, friendly and social teaching style.

Join us on February 1st

On February 1st, iTandCoffee is hosting our first Be Connected at iTandCoffee!

If you are 50 years and over, and this sounds like a program you might be interested in, please come along.

If you know someone aged 50 years and over who has minimal or no engagement with digital technology, bring them along and join us as we explore what Be Connected has on offer.

Meet our Be Connected tutors and sign-up to discover how being online can add new skills and experiences to your life.

Don't worry if you don't yet have any technology. iTandCoffee will be able to assist you, offering regular times that you can pop in and use our technology to access the program.

No bookings are required. If you would like to talk to us about this program, call iTandCoffee on 1300 885 420 or 03 9886 0814.
