How to easily re-size photos from the Photos app on Mac

Picture
Image by Werner Moser from Pixabay
Client Kate needed to be able to make copies of some files in her Photos app and convert them to a smaller file size (preferably less than 500KB).

The Photos app on the Mac makes this exercise very easy - allowing you to export photos as a variety of resolutions (low, medium, high) and even specify the width that each photo should be.

Storing your recipes in Notes - and creating a folder/subfolder structure

Picture
Image by Roy Guisinger from Pixabay
I was recently asked by a client if I had a suggestion for how she could store her recipes on her iPad.

I suggested to her that she could use the Notes app - as it has all the features she needs to categorise her recipes and to allow her to scan any hard-copy recipes.

How to add a page number in Pages for iPad and iPhone

Picture
We recently ran a 'Looking at Pages for iPad and iPhone' info session as one of our online Zoom Personal Technology Training (PTT) sessions. (Here's the video of that session, for those of you who have Online or Premium membership of the iTandCoffee Club. Learn more about the iTandCoffee Club - and accessing great content like this - here.)

One of the questions at the end - which we didn't have time to address during the 1-hour session - was how you can add a page number to the bottom of each page.

How can I make my Optusnet emails sync across devices - does Optusnet support IMAP?

Picture
I actually published this article about a year ago after assisting multiple clients to solve this issue.  After discussing it once again with a client in the past few days, I figured it is worth publishing again as I still get lots of requests for this information.

In fact, just a few days ago, I received an email from someone who had spent hours and hours on the phone to both Optus and Apple, trying to get her Optus email set up as IMAP on her Mac - all to no avail. Her email to us expressed her gratitude that iTandCoffee's article solved her problem quickly and easily, where the 'experts' could not.

So, here is last year's article again for any Optus mail users out there who are still using the old Pop method of connecting devices to their Optusnet mail.

Understanding POP vs IMAP

Many Optusnet email users still have the frustration of having to manage their mail on multiple device. When they read, delete or send an email on one device, this does not reflect on their other device/s.

This type of email account is called POP.

With POP mail, a copy of your mail is downloaded to each of your devices, so that you are then working with only the copy of the email. Deleting the message only deletes it on the one device. Sent mail can only be seen on the device from which it was sent. Mail that you have read on one device is marked as 'unread' on others.

How you can sort the apps on your iPad or iPhone into Alphabetical order

Picture
Image by Gerd Altmann from Pixabay
This article, from July 2020, is being re-printed for Janet W, a Club member who asked about this topic at a recent User Group.
I recently purchased a new iPad, and set it up using an iCloud backup.

I like to have my key apps on the first and second Home Screens and then other apps grouped from the third screen onwards. My restore from iCloud had removed all these groupings and left my apps spread across about 15 Home Screen (yes, I know that's a lot of apps - certainly time for a clean-out!).

So I set about finding my key apps to put them on the first two Home Screens, but found it difficult to find them across the multitude of home screens. It was like finding a needle in a haystack.

The solution? I decided to sort the apps into alphabetical order, which made it so much easier to find them. Here's how I did this.

How to add a link to some text in an email - in Mac Mail and Outlook for Windows or Mac

Picture
When you want to sent a hyperlink to a web page as part of an email, it is nice to be able to put some text like "Click here to view the article" instead of what might be a very long-winded URL (i.e. the address of the web page).

Let me explain what mean.  As an example, I have an link to a web page that has an interesting article about Women in Technology, and I want to send this article to a friend.

I could just copy and paste the following link into the email.

https://timeline.com/women-pioneered-computer-programming-then-men-took-their-industry-over-c2959b822523?gi=e05845aed6d7.

Alternatively, I can type the "Here is a good article about women in technology" and add a link behind the text so that it looks like this

If you are a Google Photos user who wants to see all your photos downloaded to your computer, there is an option that makes this quite easy.

Do I need an app like Dragon Dictation to dictate on my Mac?

Picture
iTandCoffee Club member Ann asked this question recently - as she had lots of reports to write on her Mac, and was wondering if she could simply dictate these reports on her Mac to save on typing. In particular, she wondered if she needed special app for Mac that could understand the fairly complex medical terms that she would be dictating.

The great news is that dictation is a built-in feature of the Mac, and it can be activated from the Menu bar or using a keyboard shortcut.

In fact, I am using it right now to dictate this sentence. And we found that it was excellent at transcribing complex medical terms.

Quickly deleting files, folders and photos on the Mac - and how to delete characters to the right of your cursor position

Picture
One of the common questions asked during classes about the Mac relates to deleting files and folders - whether there is quick way to delete files, one that avoids having to drag the file/folder to the trash can at bottom right!

Just hitting the delete key on the keyboard doesn't allow such deletion.

Another common question is about how to delete characters to the right on Mac given that, unlike with a Windows keyboard, there are not separate keys for 'backspace' and 'delete'.

There is only the delete key, which deletes text to the left.
