Photos from iPhone are in HEIC format. How can they be used on Windows?

How do you export photos from Mac's Photos app to a folder, USB stick or external hard drive?

This question comes up very regularly from Mac users. Just this week, I assisted a client who needed to get her photos downloaded from iCloud Photo Library without turning on iCloud Photo Library on her Mac. (Here's a separate article describing how to do this.)

How to change the name of your iPad or iPhone

Does your iPad or iPhone have the correct name? Or does it have the generic name of iPad or iPhone?

When you use features like Airdrop and Personal Hotspot, it is essential that your device is named so it can be distinguished from other devices.

A generic name for the device could make it hard to identify it if you are in a crowded place where lots of other iPhones and iPads are 'broadcasting' their names.

Please check your iCloud setup - not just for your own sake, but for the sake of your friends!

Please consider your friends when setting up your iCloud and iMessage!

If you are already using iCloud and iMessage, please, please check the Apple ID that you are using, and whether any other family members are using that same ID.

This article has been prompted by a recent visit to a client who discovered that, due to incorrect setup of devices in the household, her children (and perhaps husband) had been receiving some very private messages that were sent to her by a girlfriend. It was horrifying to think that the kids were privy to some very personal information shared between close friends.

It highlighted once again that we all need to be aware of the fact that Messages we send to others may not just be going to that person! So be careful what you say!

For the sake of others who Message you, and who would like to think that they are only corresponding with you, please make sure that you are not using a 'shared' Apple ID for Messages.

Let's look at how you can check this.

Images in Messages are always of low quality - how do I make them better (or vice-versa)?

I noticed recently that the photos that I was sending via my Messages app were of quite low quality.

This low image quality can be a good thing if you don't want to use a lot of data sending (and storing) photos in Messages.

But if you are wanting to send a decent resolution version of a photos or photos, you will want to adjust your settings to ensure the quality you need.

Outlook won't open on my Windows computer

I have had 4 clients with this issue just over the past week.

They would click on Outlook on their Windows computer, but it would not open. If they checked the Task Manager, there was no sign of Outlook in the list of apps currently running.

So what did we do to resolve this problem in each case?

Handy apps and website for working out a meeting time for different time zones

If you ever need to set up a time to talk to someone in a different country, looking at your own availability and then working out the equivalent time in that other location can be a challenge.

The World Clock in the standard Clock app on the iPad and iPhone is great for working out the current time at other locations around the world. But it doesn't give the option of putting in a future time and seeing the equivalent time at other locations.

The good news is that, as is usually the case, there is an app for that. In fact, there are a couple that I use.

When I try to send a PDF in Mail, it seems to be an image instead

I get asked about this one on a very regular basis.

A client in Brisbane contacted me in that past fortnight concerned that, when she added a PDF file to an email in the Mac Mail app, the PDF file showed as an image - and she was concerned that the person at the other end would be receiving an image instead of a PDF.

She wanted to see the file as an 'attachment' icon, rather than as a picture.

Another client contacted me to ask why, whenever she used a recommended scanning app to scan a document using her iPhone (as covered by the PTT session video 'Ditch that Scanner'), the Mail option within that app seemed to create a draft email with an image of her document instead of a PDF - even though she had selected the 'PDF' format option in the scanning app.

How to download a YouTube video to your iPhone or iPad

I was asked recently to assist a client with downloading a YouTube video for embedding in a Powerpoint presentation.

(It should be noted that the downloading of YouTube videos is only legal if it is your own video, or you have permission from the owner of the video.)

When I need to download any YouTube videos, I use an excellent app that is available as a free app in the App Store on the iPhone and iPad.
