The latest upgrade to the operating systems for our iPad and iPhones (iPadOS 14 and iOS 14) delivered quite a few changes to the Messages app.
But there is one that I have been wanting to see for a long time - in relation to emojis. And it has finally arrived.
I am currently in the process of upgrading all of iTandCoffee's Introduction to the Mac book series, to include all the latest features and screens from macOS 11 Big Sur.
In the Backup, Apps and Preference book (part 3 of the series), I cover some great tips for using Safari. Here are a couple that are new in Big Sur. 11/12/2020 0 Comments A warning to parents who will be sending their child to school in 2021 with a new laptopIt's that time of year again - when many parents will be going through the stress of purchasing and setting up technology for their child for the new school year.
The BYO policy applicable for many schools allows parents to choose to purchase either a Windows or Apple laptop for their child. Sometimes the school purchases and sets up the device on behalf of the parent. A warning if you are one of these parents. Before you hand over the new laptop to your child, consider that this laptop could open up a world of inappropriate content to your child if not set up correctly. There are some important things be aware of and to check - even if the school has set up the computer for you. 9/12/2020 1 Comment Are you planning to organise all those old photos over Christmas? There's a great app for that!Over the Christmas break a couple of years ago, I finally got around to sorting out a pile of old family photos - photos that I wanted to scan and save as digital versions and then share with the rest of my family.
So, I thought ... Wouldn't it be great if you could just point your iPhone at a set of old photos and have them scanned, cropped, clarified and saved to your Photos app? Even better, wouldn't it be great if you could also put the information written on the back of the photo onto this digital photo, so that you don't lose that information? And, even better again, wouldn't it lovely if those photos then appeared in your Photos timeline in the correct year/month, so that you could easily find them again. It's that time of year again, where so many parents are having to put on their 'IT' hat and set up devices for the upcoming school year.
If the device that you are setting up for your child is an iPad or iPhone, there is a list of things that you need to consider when setting up these devices. We have put pen to paper (or fingers to the keyboard) and written up this list for you. Select the button below to view this checklist. 9/12/2020 1 Comment A lovely feature to use when sending a Message to someone special this ChristmasThe Messages app has some wonderful special effects that are really worth discovering. Here is one that I love using every now and then. It is the 'send with echo' effect, and below are a couple of examples in very short videos (press play ▶︎ to watch each).
7/12/2020 0 Comments "How can I organise the photos in my Mac's Photos library without using Albums?"
Over the weekend just gone, I got a lovely email from someone who had purchased the iTandCoffee guide "The Photos App on the Mac (Catalina Edition)" - a 97 year old gentleman from Inverness in Scotland!
Here's what he wrote: "The Photos App Catalina Edition” has just been purchased by a 97 year old in Inverness, Sotland. He is seeking to rearrange the pictures in his Photos Library which has 30+ years of accumulated imports from 4 Macs dating back to probably OS 7.0. Your book only deals with organising by creating albums, not the library content itself. Is there a command to organise the Library mix before creating albums?.The bulk of my collection is historical scans with no camera information. Regards from otherwise delighted Jim W
Here's the response I gave him - in case any other reader has a similar question about 'arranging' their own Photos library.
Here's a checklist for improving your Mac's performance
They do say patience is a virtue but there is nothing more frustrating than a slow start-up of your MacBook or iMac, especially when it should only take around 30 seconds - normally!
And we are all familiar with the frustration of apps that take forever to start, or to do whatever it is they should do. That ‘spinning beachball of death’ can really raise the blood pressure. My husband Jim received a text today (see above photo) that very nearly caught him out. In fact, I know of at least one other person DID fall for the same scam in the same week.
