11/10/2015 0 Comments So, is it time yet to upgrade to iOS9?I know there are many people out there who read the iTandCoffee newsletter, and who are waiting for iTandCoffee to give 'the nod' on going ahead with the upgrade of their iPad or iPhone to iOS 9. As you probably already know, Apple released a second update to iOS 9, 9.0.2, on October 1st - fixing a few more outstanding issues with the latest operating system for our Apple mobile devices, including a security 'hole' with the lock screen. In the days since then, there have been very few reports of any issues with this latest version - and the reports are not about any of the fundamental operations of the devices. So, for those who have been waiting, you can go ahead with the update now. But don't forget to make sure you have a valid backup before you proceed. I have had a couple of clients contact me about the upgrade stopping part way through, and then requiring them to restore from their backup. If you need any help with your backup or the update, contact iTandCoffee on 1300 885 420 or email enquiry@itandcoffee.com.au For those of you who have not yet had a chance to register for the half-price session* about the great new features of iOS 9 - to be held tomorrow (Monday Oct 12, 9:30-11:30am) at iTandCoffee in Glen Iris - get in quick. There are only a couple of places left. If you miss out on these places and are still interested in attending this class, please email iTandCoffee at bookings@itandcoffee to let us know. If there is enough interest, we may schedule another of these half-price sessions in the next week or two
*This session is half-price for iTandCoffee Club members - $25 instead of $50 for this two-hour session. Non-members can attend for a cost of $50 per person. Many people are not aware of a feature that arrived on our Macs with iOS 8, which gave us the ability to send a large file (or set of files) in an email using an iCloud feature called 'Mail Drop'. This feature will detect cases where your mail message would be too large to send, and will instead upload the files in the email to iCloud, and then just send a 'download' link to each file to the recipients. The recipients will click on the file link, and be taken to a webpage that allows them to then download the file that you sent. Find out how to turn on and use this great feature in this Handy Hint for iTandCoffee Club Members. (Make sure you have signed in - use the link in the right-hand sidebar if you haven't yet.) Problem with Apple downloads for Telstra customers
On Thursday and Friday this week, I was hugely frustrated by problems with downloading software updates from Apple.
For an iTunes update attempted at a client's, and for my own downloads at home on Friday, the 'progress bar' was showing that the update would take at least 24 hours! At my client's, it said we would have to wait 50 hours for an iOS 9.0.1 download. In the end, my El Capitan download for Mac took about 9 hours - on our extra fast broadband Telstra cable service, that should have seen it take less than an hour. Well, I have just read the following article in The Age about the reason for my problems. There is a fault in an under-sea cable between Singapore and here that is causing slow downloads and streaming from Apple for some users. Read more here. It is such a common occurrence at iTandCoffee to see a client's computer littered with duplicate files in the Downloads area. This is usually the result of multiple attempts to download a file, software upgrade or some other content, where the Mac user is not aware of where that download went, or what to do with it! This Mac handy hint will help you with this problem, by showing you where those files go and what to do with them! This handy hint is available for members of The iTandCoffee Club. I must say I am loving the additional features offered only by the iPhone 6S. But there are so many that other devices owners will also love. There's such a long list of features, so the easiest way of presenting them is to offer a 2-hour information session at iTandCoffee in Glen Iris. This Information Session will be run on Monday 12th October at 10am, in place of the previously planned Dropbox Information Session at that time. If there is enough demand, I will arrange further sessions. This session will be HALF PRICE for iTandCoffee Club members, at $25. Non-members are very welcome to attend at a cost of $50. Click the below link to book. Numbers are strictly limited, so get in early to avoid missing out. Please note that this information session will be looking at iOS 9 new features only, and will not be a class on existing features of the iPad or iPhone. Anyone seeking to learn about the key features and functionality of their i-Device/s should consider one of the other classes offered by iTandCoffee, such as

It's been a busy few weeks at Apple.
Not only has Apple updated and twice patched the operating system for its mobile devices (iOS 9, 9.01 and 9.0.2), it has now released the new operating system for Mac, OS X 10.11 El Capitan (replacing OS 10.10 Yosemite). I have not yet had a chance to test drive this new operating system on my Mac, as the download is still in progress! I think Apple's servers might be a bit slow at the moment due to demand for the new software upgrades. Here is an article from MacWorld, published yesterday, which gives an overview of the great features in store when my upgrade finally downloads and installs!
For those of you more cautious than me (which I highly recommend you be!), wait a while for this new version to 'bed down' and problems to be resolved before taking the risk of upgrading.
And ABSOLUTELY make sure you have a valid backup before applying this upgrade. If you need help with the upgrade or ensuring you have a backup, please contact iTandCoffee on 1300 885 420 or enquiry@itandcoffee.com.au |
