Dianne S asks: "Would you recommend we renew our Trend Micro internet security, or do you believe there is a better one?"
Dianne had initially used the anti-virus product that came with her Windows 10 computer, but now wonders if that is the best one to use - and pay for - in future.
When it comes to anti-virus protection on your Windows computer, the product you choose really depends on who is using the computer, the sort of things you/they are doing on the computer, whether you have kept your Windows and browser software up to date, and whether you have any nasty browser plug-ins like Java.
Windows 10 (and 8) has built-in anti-virus software called Windows Defender, which is free and unobtrusive. (For Windows 7, the free product is Windows Security Essentials, which is free to download and install.)
I must say, I do just use the built-in protection on my own Windows 10 computer (and Windows Security Essentials on an older Windows 7 computer), which are only used by me. If my kids were using the computer, I would consider using something a bit better.
Here is an article that discusses whether or not Windows Defender is adequate: What’s the Best Antivirus for Windows 10? (Is Windows Defender Good Enough?)
For anyone looking to find the best alternative (free or paid), here are some very recent articles on this topic.
Hopefully all this information this will assist you to make your own decision about which product to use going forward.
