The native Phone app will switching seamlessly to Wi-Fi (if it is available) if the cellular signal drops out or is limited.
If you have ever noticed the words Wi-Fi Call at the top (as shown in the example shown above), that is because your Wi-Fi calling feature is available and active. In my case, because I am with Telstra, I see the words Telstra Wi-Fi Call when this feature is active.
Below are the instructions for turning on (or off) the Wi-Fi Calling feature on your iPhone. I am leaving this feature ON on my own device, as the iTandCoffee Shop has quite low 4G signal, so it is good to know that the Wi-Fi will cut in and take over when it is needed.
Enabling / Disabling Wi-Fi Calling on the iPhone
On your iPhone, visit Settings, and look for the Phone settings.
Tap Wi-Fi Calling and simply turn off the Wi-Fi Calling on this iPhone option. (You can also access the same setting from Settings -> Mobile.)
When you turn this option to ON, a confirmation message will request that you confirm that you wish to Enable this feature (as shown above).
The message provides details of what information will be provided to various service providers and operators about your Wi-Fi connection. The information provided is needed for things such as metering your call based on location (since a Wi-Fi call will be treated as a normal mobile call).
But I don't have this feature?
You must have an iPhone 5c or newer for the Wi-Fi Calling feature to work.
The availability of the feature then depends whether your service provider offers Wi-Fi calling for the plan that you are using. Many prepaid plans do not offer the service. Contact your service provided for further information, or try Googling something like 'Wi-fi calling service-provider-name'.
Will Wi-Fi calls use my home internet data allowance?
Wi-Fi calls are charged as normal mobile phone calls even though they may use Wi-Fi.
If the Wi-Fi call uses a Wi-Fi connection from your own Telco/ISP (at home or elsewhere), the internet data usage is un-metered. If you are using a Wi-Fi connection supplied by a different ISP, then the data usage is metered - in which case you will need consider how much data allowance is available to you.
