A handy checklist for travelling with technology

It starts with a really handy checklist of things to consider in the lead-up to and during your travels. Each of these items is covered in further detail in the 140-page comprehensive guide. 

Here is that checklist.

• Understand the International Roaming offering/s from your Telco for your destination/s, in terms of availability, cost, limits, etc. 
• (Chapters 1-5, Appendices A-C)
• Know how to control International Roaming and how to choose which Roaming option should apply via the Telco’s App (Appendices A-C)
• Know how to control International Roaming, Mobile Data and Phone/SMS connectivity using your devices’ Settings. (Chapter 7-8)
• Decide if you need an alternative mobile service (or services) while you travel– and purchase in advance if needed.  (Chapter 6)
• Consider if it is worth changing your physical SIM to an eSIM before you go (if phone caters for eSIMs) (Chapters 6-7)
• Check out if Wi-Fi Calling is available while on home Wi-Fi Network, so that you know how to detect if it is available when you travel (Chapter 5)
• Understand the dangers of Public Wi-Fi and how to stay safe – and install a VPN to ensure that safety (Chapter 19)
• Prepare your devices by turning off mobile options that could unintentionally use data (unless you are not concerned about data usage) (Chapter 8)
• Make sure your device has enough storage for all your travel data, apps, photos – delete (or offload) unwanted apps/data (Chapter 9)
• Pre-download necessary apps, translations, maps, city guides (Chapter 20)
• Get the apps associated with all your accommodation, bookings, tickets, etc (Chapters 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 19, 20, 21)
• Get your itinerary into digital format – all stored so that internet is not required (offline storage) (Chapter 15)
• In advance, test out the messaging and internet calling apps you will be using with the key people with whom you will need to have contact while travelling (Chapter 10-12)
• Pack those travel accessories, adaptors, charges, cables – including SIM pin (extractor) if needed (Chapter 18)
• Money – will you use a travel debit card? Get the app/s, know how to load currency, consider pre-loading when exchange rate is good. Get a currency conversion app. (Chapter 21)
• Think about your travel photos – will you be using iCloud? Do you have enough storage on your device and in iCloud? (Chapter 22)
• Pre-load entertainment (movies, series, podcasts, books) (Chapter 23)
• Make sure Find My is enabled – and know how to find/lock/erase a lost device (Chapter 19)
• Make sure you know your Apple ID and password - in case you need to access Find My from someone else’s device.  (Chapter 19)
• Get those passwords into a form that is paperless! And make sure your iPad/iPhone has a good Passcode. (Chapter 15)
• Add Medical ID information to your iPhone (including emergency contacts) (Chapter 19)
