A summary of my favourite new features in iOS 16 for iPhone

There are some really handy new features in iOS 16, and we would love to demonstrate and chat about these new features with those who are interested. We have tentatively scheduled two potential dates for a 1-hour Zoom session where we will explore these new features - 

• Thu October 6th at 6:30pm and
• Mon October 10th at 4pm.

New in iOS 16 - Customisable Lock Screens

iOS 16 brings some really lovely customisations to the iPhone's Lock Screen.

You can now set up multiple Lock Screens, featuring your favourite photo/photos, wallpaper and more. You can add Widgets (eg for weather, activity, calendar, battery and more), adjust the colour, filter, font style, and tie a particular Lock Screen to a Focus Type. 

Managing your Lock Screens can be done directly from the Lock Screen (when your iPhone is unlocked), as well as from Settings->Wallpaper. And your Home Screen background can be paired with your Lock Screen (and blurred if needed).

I have to say that I didn't think I would be interested in this set of changes, but I do actually love it and have set up multiple Home Screens already, featuring my favourite photos. (And I used Canva to create photos that sit really well on the Lock Screen, for cases where the photo would otherwise be the wrong proportions.)

New in Messages

The new features of Messages include the ability to

• Edit and recall Messages after sending
• Retrieve deleted Messages from a Recently Deleted area
• Mark a Message as Unread (to remind you to return to it later)
• Filter your Messages to just show Unread Messages

New in Photos

There are some really useful changes in iOS 16's Photos app - 

• Lift people and things out of a photo and paste elsewhere – eg a Message, Note, etc. (fun!)
• Find and resolve Duplicates (love this one!)
• Deleted and Hidden albums require Face ID to access
• Copy and Paste Edits
• Quick access to a range of options when looking at an individual photo

New in Mail

Apple's Mail app is finally providing some of the features that other apps have included for a while, plus some other useful improvements:

• Schedule an Email
• Set a reminder for a mail message
• Recall an email within 10-30 secs of send
• Improved Search
• Follow Up feature for sent emails needing response
• Notification if attachment/recipient missing
• Rich Links (ie. preview of a link with pic from the page)
• Focus filter for email account – eg. to hide work account emails at weekend​

New in Notes

In iOS 16, you can now lock Notes with the device's passcode instead of having to set up a separate Notes password (although, for security, I would always recommend a separate password for your locked Notes). Other features are

• Quick Notes comes to iPhone
• Smart Folders are enhanced
• Some new grouping and filtering features

New in Contacts

FINALLY! 

​In iOS 16, you can finally create and manage your Contact Groups (called Lists) - so that you can, say, send an email to a group of people easily. Previously, you could only do this if you had a computer - either via the Contacts app on the Mac, or from iCloud.com.

You can also now quickly delete Contacts (instead of it being a multi-step, painful process!), easily find and fix duplicated contacts and access some other actions/options much more quickly.

Battery, Dictation, Wi-Fi

Battery - iPhones without a Home button can finally show the % amount again, instead of just the battery symbol, and you will get a warning if the phone gets too hot while charging.
Dictation – The on-screen keyboard stays while you dictate - allowing for quick edits/typing without stopping the dictation. There is also auto-punctuation - although I prefer to 'speak' my own punctuation!
Wi-Fi - This one is handy - you can now see the password of the Wi-Fi network to which you are currently connected!

Health, Siri, Spotlight, Safety Check

Last, but not least, we have a few other useful features that are worth checking out.

• Health App – Record medications and get reminder to take
• Siri – Adjust how long ‘she’ waits on a pause, and asking for guidance
• Spotlight – always showing at bottom of Home Screen
• Safety Check – for victims of domestic violence
