Hold fire if you were just about to purchase a new Mac. Apple has just announced its range of new look 24-inch iMacs - and it's quite a change from their previous look. So square, and so colourful!
Orders will open on April 30th 2021, for delivery in the second half of May 2021.
But this is not all that was announced this week. And a major update is also due this week.
Here's an article that talks about all the announcements by Apple on April 21st.
A look at AU pricing of the new iMacs
Before we look at other product announcements by Apple, let's talk about the new iMacs first. It's worth noting the pricing for these new look, colourful iMacs.
All of these new models have the new M1 chip. The base model will start at $1899, giving you 256GB of storage and 8GB of RAM - but only 2 Thunderbold/USB 4 ports. This model also gives you the standard Magic Keyboard (instead of the new, described below). The colour range of this basic model is also limited.
Most people will choose to pay (at least) another $300 ($2199) to get another two USB 3 ports and a Gigabit Ethernet port - and to get the new Magic Keyboard that has Touch ID.
Another $300 again will get you 512GB instead of 256GB - an upgrade I would recommend for most people who are buying a new iMac. That gives a price of $2499 for the 512GB version.
So, if you are in the market for a new Mac, it would be worth looking at these new models once they are available - so that you have the latest, greatest. Orders will open on April 30th.

AirTags are finally here
I have been a long-term user of Tiles - little devices that you attach to your keyring (or anything else that you want to track) so that you can find you keys using your iPhone/iPad, or find your iPhone/iPad using your Tile.
Well, now Apple has come along with its own equivalent of the Tile - called an AirTag. AirTags will work with the Find My app and use the global Find My network to help you find your lost item. You can customise your Airtags to include letters or symbols.
AirTags are priced at AU$45 for one and $149 for 4. They can be ordered online now for delivery in May. They will available in store from May 1st.
The keyring (and other AirTag accessories) must be purchased separately. The Apple leather keyring is $55, but there are also keyrings and holders in other materials and by third-party suppliers. The cheapest option available at the time of writing this article is a Belkin keyring for $19.95.
Here is Apple's press release about AirTags, and its web page about AirTag accessories:
And here is another article listing some non-Apple Accessories (so far - I'm sure many more will follow).
And here are some articles that are worth reading before purchasing any AirTag/s. As one of them notes, one key feature missing from the new AirTags is the 'two-way' search function. You can only find your AirTag from your Apple Device - and not the other way around. Tiles allow the two-way search PLUS they work with Android devices as well.
But wait, there's more!
Other products were also announced - new iPad Pro models, a new Apple TV, a re-vamped Apple TV remote and a PURPLE iPhone 12. Read Apple's press releases on these below.

iOS/iPadOS update likely this week
To support the new devices - especially the AirTags - Apple will be releasing a major update to iOS and iPadOS. iOS/iPadOS 14.5 is likely to be available from the middle of this week.
Given that this one is a more major update (not just a 'fix' release), it is worth waiting at least a few days (or even a bit longer) before applying the update. This will give everyone else a chance to find any significant problems! I will report in the next newsletter (around May 9) on whether 'the coast is clear' to proceed with installation of iOS/iPadOS 14.5.
