iTandCoffee presented the topic Great Apps for Mobile Devices at Hawthorn's U3A last week. At the end of the session, the attendees offered their own suggestions for handy apps on their mobile devices. Two suggestions stood out as particularly relevant after after the recent Bourke Street terrorist attack.
These are apps that allow you to easily report on something that has happened or that you have seen. Our resident digital native Heidi writes about these apps below.
With the shocking occurrence on Burke street a few weeks ago now, the amount of people I know that unfortunately witnessed this is truly scary.
For this incident, there were plenty of witnesses and footage to be sure of what happened but, in other situations where the event/incident may not be as public, eyewitness evidence can be critical to the investigation and trials.
Every person will have their own story, but over time this memory can be distorted and forgotten.
The iWitnessed app is designed for any witness to any scenario to quickly note down a detailed recount for preservation of an eyewitness report to be later presented to authorities or even further down the track, in court.
Some witnesses do not come forward to police immediately after an event also, this delay can lead to forgotten details which could undermine the quality of evidence if the witness did decide to make a statement down the track.
Information entered via the iWitnessed app remains on the user’s device, and can be locked with a PIN code. If witnesses choose to do so, they can send their account to police in an email (nb. all evidence stays with you on your device unless you go out and forward it yourself).
Snap Send Solve
Imagine it’s a Saturday afternoon, you’re taking the kids down to the local park to have a go on the swings and they’re broken. You return a few weekends later and they’re still out of order, the council may not even know this needs to be rectified.
Now, wouldn’t it be great if you could quickly snap a photo to report to your local council without hanging out over the phone, filling out a form then providing your evidence – I know I couldn’t be bothered going through any ordeal to fix a swing set I might someday use again.
Whether it be a pothole in the road, abandoned shopping trollies, broken play equipment, missing street signs or vandalism – there is an app to get this sorted with little to no energy expired!
Meet the Snap Send Solve app!
This app allows you to snap a picture then send a report of the issue to that particular locations local council to be solved.
By categorising incident types and assigning them to the appropriate council based on your location, Snap Send Solve makes reporting issues a quick and simple thing to do. It also can give you the satisfaction of contributing to getting things fixed in our local community
Download it for free from the App Store to give it a go!
