Readers of this blog will know that I recently featured a clever little device that plugs into your car's cigarette lighter, has 2 USB ports, and can store the location of where you park your car.Well, today I discovered that Apple has now rendered my nifty little device almost redundant with one of the new features of iOS 10. My iPhone can now tell me where I parked my car - even without that additional device that I purchased! I can ask Siri 'Where is my car?'. How good is that! This is just one of the features that I have found noteworthy in iOS 10. Below are some others that I will definitely make use of - and I am sure there will be more to come, as I play with iOS 10 more and more. iTandCoffee Club members can tap/click on 'More Details›' for some of the items below to find out more about the feature. 9/9/2016 2 Comments An upgrade to iOS for our iPhones and iPads is coming next week. Should you install it straight away? You have most likely heard the news this week that Apple has announced its next iPhone model, as well as an next generation Apple Watch. In addition to these new products, Apple also announced that its next major upgrade of iOS on hour iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches. iOS 10 will be released on September 13th. Here is information from local and international press about iOS 10 and what it will offer. Is my device going to be able to be upgraded to iOS 10? When should I upgrade? As usual, iTandCoffee recommends that, unless you are super-keen the grab the 'latest and greatest', it is best to hold off for at least a couple of weeks (or perhaps longer) before downloading and installing the upgrade.
Quite often, the initial versions of an upgrade have teething problem - and you may prefer to allow other people to discover these problems and wait until Apple has released its subsequent 'update' release (or releases). The fortnightly iTandCoffee newsletter will keep you updated on news of the stability (or otherwise) of iOS 10, and will provide a recommendation on when it is safe to go ahead and upgrade. Apple has rushed out another security update for iOS (for our iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches), and has advised that devices should be updated as soon as possible. iOS 9.3.5 apparently patches a potential security hole - one that, in reality, is unlikely to effect the likes of you and I, but one can never be too safe in this internet connected world. Here is an article about this update from Macworld for those who want to read more:This article includes the following paragraph describing the potential threat. "When used together, the exploits allow someone to hijack an iOS device and control or monitor it remotely. Hijackers would have access to the device’s camera and microphone, and could capture audio calls even in otherwise end-to-end secured apps like WhatsApp. They could also grab stored images, tracking movements, and retrieve files." To apply this update, go to Setting -> General -> Software Update, and choose 'Download and Install' or "install'. Make sure you are connected to a WiFi network when you do this - updates cannot be done over 3G/4G.
iOS updates seem to be coming thick and fast for our iPads and iPhones, with yet another (9.3.4) released on Thursday August 4. Just like the very recent 9.3.3 update, iOS 9.3.4 plugs a potential security hole that has been discovered by someone in China. Apple is very good at quickly releasing updates to patch such potential 'holes', which have not usually been used yet 'in the wild'. The risk of someone using this security hole to do something nasty to your device is pretty slim, but my motto is 'better to be safe than sorry'. So I have gone ahead and downloaded and installed this update and have not had any concerns. I have checked online, and no problems have been reported there. Here is an article from CNet that gives further information about iOS 9.3.4 - for those who would like to further understand the content of this update. I would suggest it's quite safe to go ahead and install this update. Just remember to always consider the size of these updates if you have limited home internet. Luckily, this one is reported in the below article as being around only 25MB - much smaller than many of their updates! As always, iTandCoffee can help you with such an update - just make an appointment by calling 1300 885 420, or email bookings@itandcoffee.com.au.
It appears that the problem with Safari crashing when any links are tapped is still plaguing some iPhone or iPad users who have upgraded to iOS 9.3. Two particular apps - Bookings.com and Wikipedia - seem to be the culprits. If you are a frequent user of these apps, you may be one of those having problems. I have just seen a potential solution described online in the below article, suggesting that turning off Javascript in, Settings -> Safari -> Advanced, may resolve the problem. My devices are not suffering this problem, so if any readers are impacted, let me know if this resolves your own device's issues. Here are a couple of articles that outline the cause of the problem with links, and the potential solution. The first one also has a much more convoluted solution involving connecting with iTunes on a computer (for anyone brave enough and desperate enough to try it)
Update 31/3/16: Refer post A fix has been released for the Safari links issue with iOS 9.3 ... for an update on this issue. Overnight last night (early Tues 22/3), Apple hosted another of its 'Town Hall Meetings' to announce some new products and an update to iOS - iOS 9.3. iOS 9.3 has some quite a few handy features - a few really stood out for me:
The full list of updates and fixes Here is an Evernote Note that shows the content of this software update (as compiled from screenshots of my iPad screen before updating). And here is a Macworld Article describing iOS 9.3: Is it safe to download? For anyone who is wondering whether it is safe to proceed with this download, I would suggest that you can go ahead. I have been using it for the last few days without any problems, and have not heard of any significant issues. As with any update to iOS, make sure you have a backup before you update. If you run into any problems, this article might help you resolve them: Need Help? Of course, if you need assistance with this download and installation - or perhaps don't have enough data allowance to download the required file - contact iTandCoffee on 1300 885 320 or at enquiry@itandcoffee.com.au.
Another update to iOS on our iPhones and iPad will be arriving some time soonish.
iOS 9.3 will include a major new set of features for supporting multiple users of individual iPads in schools - a set of changes that may make the iPad even more popular for education use. But it also and has some other new features that I really like. Here are a couple: A new 'Night Shift' mode will automatically adjust the colours on iPhone and iPad screens when night falls, becoming warmer and less eye-straining so that Apple users won't be disturbed by interruptions to their sleep caused by harsh blue screen light. The iOS 9.3 system update will also offer a Fingerprint Lock for the Notes application
Here is the full article that I have 'scooped' to my Scoop.it page.
Apple has released its next update to iOS 9 - iOS 9.2. For those of you with Macs, OSX 10.11.2 is also available. One of the key problems that iOS 9.2 is supposed to fix is one that has been impacting many iTandCoffee clients, whereby the mail message's content 'disappears' and is not accessible after the mail message is initially read. When the i-Device usere come back later to look at the message, they get a message saying that the content of the message cannot be downloaded. If you have been suffering this problem, it may be worth jumping into Settings -> General -> Software Update, and downloading iOS 9.2. It also includes fixes for multiple other problems - here are my screenshots of the full list of inclusions. IOS 9.2 INCLUSIONS: If your email account is with Bigpond, Optus, iPrimus, iiNet, Netspace and several others, you may have noticed issues with accessing content of some of your mail messages under iOS 9, on both your iPad and iPhone. Here are the symptoms of this problem.
This problem is only associated with older style email accounts - POP email accounts. You won't find the same problem if your account is a Gmail, Outlook, Hotmail, Yahoo, iCloud, or other IMAP style of email account. |
