If your iPad is one of the more recent models - an iPad Mini 2 or iPad Air and later models - there is a handy new iOS 9 feature called Slideover, Slideover allows you to see more than one app on your screen at once, viewing the second app as a 'sidebar' on the right-hand side of the screen. (Note. This is different to the new 'split screen' feature, which only works on the newest iPads.) Slideover is handy for the situation where you want to view and perhaps use another app, but want your original app to stay on the screen. As an example, you might be browsing Safari, hear a 'ding' and want to quickly check the email that just arrived - without having to leave the Safari screen. Just swipe from the right-hand edge towards the left to see the Slideover sidebar. This will show the previous app that you used in slideover mode. Once you have your 'Slideover' bar visible, you can 'drag down' that side bar from the top to see a list of other available apps - which will be only apps that can work in this 'slideover' mode. Tap a different app to view and use it - all while keeping your original screen visible in the background. Then, to get rid of your slideover side bar and return to your main app, just slide it closed by swiping to the right. In some apps, you will need to make sure you swipe from the centre right - as the 'swipe to left from edge of screen' function already exists for swiping between pages in certain apps.. From Slideover to Split Screen - for really new iPads only If you do have one of the really new iPads, when you have an app visible in slideover sidebar, you may also be able to slide that app further across to the left to go into 'split screen' mode. This only works for certain apps that have the 'split screen' capability enabled.

It is something that is so simple, but often undiscovered by many iPad users. There is such an easy way to adjust the brightness of your screen or your device's volume, without ever having to visit your Settings app. Just visit your Control Center, which is accessed by swiping up from below the bottom of your screen. Your volume controls are on the left, and brightness controls are on the right. Here's a quick video for those who need it. Does your iPad make a clicking sound as you type? Does it also make a different sound whenever you put it to sleep? If you would rather not hear these sounds, you can choose to turn one or both off from your Settings. Just go to Settings -> Sounds. Scroll down to the last two options - Lock Sounds and Keyboard Clicks. They are pretty self-explanatory - so turn off (slide the switch across to the left so it is no longer green) whichever sound you would rather not hear. 21/8/2015 0 Comments Customising the 'Sent from my iPhone' (or iPad) sign-off on your iPad and iPhoneThis one came up a couple of times this week during classes and appointments. Many people still have the 'Sent from my iPad' or 'Sent from my iPhone' automatically appearing in every email that they create. While this can be a handy way of excusing poor typing skills/spelling/grammar - by blaming the 'too small' on-screen keyboard perhaps - most people prefer to sign off with a more personalised 'email signature'. My own email signature includes my name, and contact details for iTandCoffee (as shown below). Find out how you can set up your own customised 'email signature' in the below handy hint, available for viewing by members of The iTandCoffee Club. An iTandCoffee client was caught out by yet another clever scam email this week.
It came from someone the person knew and said that the sender had shared a file via a Dropbox link This is something that Dropbox users do all the time! So the recipient of this email clicked on the link and got a real-looking screen that requested login information - email address and password. In this client's case, multiple passwords were tried (along with the family email address), but each time the result was a screen showing no documents. So, the email recipient called the person who 'sent' the email - only to be told that the email had resulted from the sender being caught out by the same scam and also inadvertently giving away email address and password information.
BEWARE, BEWARE, BEWARE! Once again, please be very careful of clicking on links in emails.
One thing that was interesting about this case is that, when I tried the link in the scam email (as part of my research for writing this article), I got the below message on my Mac.
This is due to a built-in setting on my Mac that warns me about any suspect sites that I try to access. My iPhone and iPad also have this setting turned on as a precaution against 'phishing' emails.
Does yours?

Another software update has arrived on your iPad and iPhone.Apple has just released an update to iOS version 8.4. iOS 8.4.1 delivers some fixes for the Apple Music service, and some security patches. So, when you see that red '1' on your Settings app, it is time to download and install this latest update. Even if your device is not yet showing this red '1', you can still go ahead with the update. Just tap on Settings -> General -> Software Update, and choose Download and Install (or Install). For a summary of what is included in this update, check out this article from MacWorld. Do you need help with this upgrade? If you need help with this update, why not make a time to pop into the iTandCoffee shop - we can help you with it. Just call 1300 885 420 or email support@itandcoffee.com.au. Yes I know. Here I go again, talking about passwords. Passwords are one of the most frustrating aspects of what I do, and of living in this online and high-tech world. While I pretty much have my own passwords under control (safely stored and easily accessible when I need them), I am EVERY DAY dealing with other peoples' forgotten passwords or the consequences of them inadvertently giving away a key password that then provides the 'bad guys' open slather access to their online world. So often in iTandCoffee appointments and classes, forgotten (or unknown) passwords stop us in our tracks. So here I go again. Please get a 'password safe' app to store your passwords, ensure that your passwords are strong and unique for each account, and store them all in this safe. The app that you will have seen me recommend previously is the FREE app 1Password, for your iPad and iPhone. It can also be purchased and downloaded on your computer (should you wish to have access to it from all your technology). The idea is that you only need to remember ONE password - like remembering the combination to a safe - and all your other passwords will be safely stored in the secure safe. Visit the app store and download it today. A feature of 1Password that I only just discovered! I had an 'OMG - that's great' moment when showing a client how to use 1Password just this week. I discovered that, when you are using Safari and other key apps on your iPad and iPhone and need to enter a password, you don't need to switch to the 1Password app to look up your password. 1Password provides something called an 'extension', which is accessible from the Share option (the option that you use to send/print/copy etc). So, when a password is requested, just tap the Share option, tap 1Password, enter your 1Password password, and tap on the name of the password you require. Magically, your password will then be filled in for you, without you having to copy and paste or type it in. (Note. Other 'password keepers' may also provide the same 'extension' feature.) Tips for creating a good 'master password' for your Password Safe The creators of 1Password, Agilebits, have and excellent article on to the topic of passwords and, in particular, for setting 'master passwords. Check out the link below. I think we need a free session on this one This topic comes up so regularly that I will shortly be organising a free session for iTandCoffee Club members, where we will 'workshop' setting up and using a password safe. If you think you'd be interested in attending such a workshop in the near future, email me at bookings@itandcoffee.com.au. |
