My brand, spanking, new iPhone 7 Plus arrived just this week and I have now had a few days to play with it. I must say that I do really like the 'Haptic' Home Button - which replaces the 'real' Home Button of my previous iPhones. It is so clever how it feels like you are pressing a button, even though your aren't! And, I am LOVING the speed of the new phone - it is certainly an improvement on previous iPhones. Even the battery seems to be lasting longer than my iPhone 6S Plus (after I fixed a problem that is outlined in the article: Battery problems after upgrade to iOS 10 - and how I fixed this). When problems occur on an iPhone 7 or 7 PlusI was having a problem with one of my 'website monitoring' apps on my new iPhone (it was crashing every time I logged in). Additionally, my Commbank business banking app was crashing every time I processed a payment. I suspected that the problem was with the Apps themselves (i.e. that they needed to have something updated to handle iOS 10), but I wanted to rule out any other problem on the iPhone. So, decided I would try to do a 'forced reboot', to see if this made any different to the performance of these apps. Forced Reboot no longer works using the 'standard' buttonsNow that the Home Button on my iPhone 7 Plus is not a 'real' button, the usual method of 'force rebooting' my iPhone does not work! Instead, this method just activated Siri or put my iPhone to Sleep! (For those who don't know, the 'usual' method of 'force rebooting' is to hold down the Sleep and Home Buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds, until the Apple symbol appears. Let go when the Apple appears, and your device will eventually fire up again, and take you to the Lock Screen. Be patient - it might take a little while sometimes. In most cases, this fixes whatever problem you were having on your older-than-iPhone-7 iPhone or iPad.) Because of the change to the Home Button on the iPhone 7 & 7 Plus, a 'forced reboot' requires a different combination of 'hardware' keys. 'Sleep' and 'Volume Down' are the new combination After a bit of research, I discovered that the combination of buttons that I now need to use to do a Forced Reboot. To Force Reboot an iPhone 7 / 7 Plus, press and hold the Sleep and Volume Down buttons concurrently for about 10 seconds, until the Apple appears, then let go. The Volume Down button is the lower of the two volume buttons on the left side of the iPhone. Some Handy Hints about 'Troubleshooting' |
This questions comes from my Mum, who is trying to just use her iPad now (and keep the lid closed on the old, ready-to-die Windows laptop). She had some photos that she needed to print, but the only option she seemed to have when printing from the iPad using the standard 'print' function from the Photos app on her iPad, was to print them as massive full-page (A4) photos. (For those of you who had not realised that you can print from your iPad and iPhone, here is an article iTandCoffee published a while ago on this topic. She actually just wanted to print several to a single page. So, as I would normally do when asked this type of question, I Googled it. There is nearly always an app that will do what you need - the issue is finding it! The app that found that I feel best caters for Mum's needs is one that I have previously mentioned in recently in this Blog. It is called Moment Mix, and it allows you to create a collage of photos that you can save, send, share and print. It is easy to use, and has a free version that has several multi-photo layouts that would generally satisfy her requirements. The purchased version of the same app is $7.99 - not cheap, but worth it if you create collages fairly often. It has lots of flexibility for colour backgrounds, adding text, adjusting resolution and aspect ratio, and much more. Here is the link to the free version of this app, for those of you who have same requirement as my Mum. |
Recently, I have met several people who have spoken to me about the need to move from their beloved old Mobile Phone (which uses the soon-to-be-decommissioned 2G network) to a new phone that uses the 3G and 4G networks.
In many cases, the people that I speak to only want their phone to serve as a phone - while some others are keen to take the opportunity to move to something a bit more 'modern', something that will do allow them to (perhaps) get emails, Google, get directions, or even take great photos.
I have encountered so many people are talked into smartphones that they find total bamboozling - rendering them unable to answer and make calls, let alone use any of the other features of these devices.
On this topic, I saw an interesting article recently in The Age this week.
For anyone brave enough to move from an old 2G phone to at smartphone, it might be worth considering a larger 'phablet' style phone like the iPhone 6S Plus which can, for many people, be both their phone AND computer/tablet.
iTandCoffee is available for advice on this area - just 1300 885 420 or email bookings@itandcoffee.com.au to make an appointment.
If you end up with an iPhone, why not attend the 'Introduction to the iPad and iPhone' class series - you will marvel at what you will be able to do with these amazing devices.
Private appointments can be arranged, where iTandCoffee can teach you how use any non-Apple device and Apple device.

Here's a question: What would happen to all your valuable photos, contacts data, document, texts, and more if your broke or lost your iPhone or iPad?
If you don't sync your device with iCloud, back your device up to iCloud, or use iTunes to sync and backup your device, all your important data that is housed on your device will, most likely, be lost. It is devastating when it happens. For kids, it can mean the loss of important school or uni work.
(Did your eyes just glaze over when I mentioned backups, iTunes and iCloud? Don't worry - you are not alone!)
At the start of another school year, it seems like a good time to talk about backups again.
Backing up your iPad and iPhone can be so easy - as easy as turning on a 'switch' in your iCloud settings. Do you know if you have done this?
Many people choose not to do this, perhaps because they don't even know that the option exists, but often because they are worried about using iCloud - worried that it is something tricky, worried about their privacy and security, worried that they just don't know what it is or what it does, worried that it might cost them lots of money.
If this sounds like you, why not come along to iTandCoffee's 2-hour session called 'Understanding and Using iCloud' on Wednesday 17th February, 10am-12pm.
We will unravel that 'glorious mystery' that is iCloud and help you make sure that you don't lose any important contents of your Apple Mobile device/s. It can all happen seamlessly for you - a 'set and forget' that gives you great peace of mind.
Those who attend this session will receive iTandCoffee's digital guide on the topic for FREE.

This week, iTandCoffee ran a couple of classes where the Notes app was used to teach Typing and Editing skills (part of the Introduction to the iPad and iPhone and Bring your Busy Life under control using your iPad and iPhone class series).
This highlighted that many users of iPads and iPhones have not updated their devices to make use of the new, improved Notes app - which became available in iOS 9.
The new Notes app has a variety of new features that have, for me, made it a much more useful app:

- insert photos, maps, links,
- draw a picture (using your finger or a stylus),
- and organise your notes into 'Folders'.
- Notes are now stored in iCloud Drive, meaning that they can be accessed from any computer, using icloud.com.

A client has been in touch with iTandCoffee this week, asking for advice on what iPhone to get and where to go to get it.
She has seen how much I LOVE my iPhone 6S Plus and is thinking about getting one for herself. She wanted details of cost and plan options for that phone, as well as an idea of other iPhone alternatives.
My email reply to this client is shown below - for anyone else who might be wanting to ask the same question.
Since I wrote that reply, I have read an article that adds another option to this mix of iPhones.
The internet is littered with reports that a new iPhone (which they are saying might be called the iPhone 5se) will be announced on March 15th, and then available as early as March 18th.
If you are looking to get a new iPhone, and prefer the smaller sized iPhone 5S, it might be worth waiting to see what is actually announced on March 15th.
Here is an article about the current rumours: iPad Air 3 and iPhone 5se to Be Available on March 18 Following March 15 Introduction
