This tip has featured in a past Handy Hint, but I know that many iTandCoffee clients and subscribers have not yet discovered it. Your iPad and iPhone have a feature called Do Not Disturb, found in your Settings. Its purpose is to allow you to tell your device to turn off any sounds and notifications - similar to the 'mute' function, but with more features than the basic muting. Do Not Disturb can be turned on and off manually whenever you need, from the Control Center (by swiping up from below the bottom of the screen). But the feature I love about Do Not Disturb is that it can be set to occur on a schedule - for example every night between 10pm and 7am. By putting your Do Not Disturb on a schedule, you can stop any noises waking you while you sleep. But it also allows you to make an exception for certain callers and can cater for 'emergency calls', where someone keeps trying to call you. Why not check it out, in Settings -> Do Not Disturb. If you are an iTandCoffee Club member, you can find out more information about this feature in the below handy hint video. Not yet a member of The iTandCoffee Club? Find out more here. If you share an iTunes account with your family, and in particular your kids, it can be really annoying to have all their games automatically appearing on your device/s! Conversely, you may want the apps you get on one of your devices to also appear on the other. This week's Handy Hint shows you how you can achieve both of these things. It includes both step-by-step instructions and a video - click on the below image to check it out. (Please note that the video shows the iOS 7 Settings. In iOS 8, the iTunes and App Store option appears a bit higher up in the list of options, under iCloud.) This handy hint will be available for viewing until Friday 20th March. After that date, an iTandCoffee Club Membership is required to view hints like this. Join the club today and gain unlimited access to a huge list of great tips about making the most from your iPad, iPhone and Mac. Some examples are shown below. I'm not sure if it is just my phone that is impacted by this issue, but since I upgraded my iPhone to iOS 8, I have not been getting Notification alerts for certain apps that previously gave me Notification alerts! I noticed this when my son told me that I had missed some important information this week from the primary school he attends, and that he had been told that I should have seen an alert from the Skoolbag app (a fantastic app that his school uses to notify parents of school-related matters - reminders, newsletters, notices). So I checked my settings in Settings -> Notifications for this app and they were all correct - showing that I should have been getting Alert notifications all along. My clever 11yo son turned off the Allow Notifications setting for the Skoolbag app, and then turned it back on. This immediately caused the latest alert to pop up. So it might be worth checking if you are perhaps missing important notifications from any of your Apps since you upgraded. I'll certainly be checking all mine by turning the Allow Notifications off then back on for the important ones. So many clients that I see have been using their Macs without realising that there is so much additional functionality and features available in the 'Context' menus, available by using the 'secondary click'. But too many have not worked out what activates this secondary click, and how to adjust the settings to suit their needs. For me, I like my 'secondary click' on my iMac's mouse to be a right-click; on my Macbook's trackbook, I click the bottom right corner to give me the 'Context' menu. See the below image for the context menu that I get when I right-click on a file in Finder. Do you know how to access this set of options? A Handy Hint has been added to the iTandCoffee Handy Hint library, describing how you go about enabling the 'secondary click' and choosing your preferred gesture for this secondary click - it includes both a short video and step-by-step written instructions.

But how do you make sure that all your own information is removed from the device before passing it on? The easiest way is to choose the Erase All Contents and Settings option, which can be found in Settings -> General -> Reset (which is the last option of the General set of options). When you choose this option, you will be removing EVERYTHING from your device, so that it can be set up as a new device by someone else. If you have a passcode, you will need to enter this to proceed with the erasing. If you have set a Restrictions passcode, you will also have to enter this to proceed. If you have Find My iPhone (or iPad) enabled in iCloud Settings on your device, you will be asked to enter your iCloud account's password in order to disable Find My iPhone. This is a security precaution introduced in iOS 7, that prevents an unauthorised person from just wiping your phone and re-activating it - they will not be able to re-activate without entering your iCloud password, rendering it useless to them if they don't have this password! Do you have to enter a code to unlock your SIM every time you turn your iPhone back on?
This can be annoying, but is something you can turn off from Settings.
By default, when your Gmail account was first installed on your device, it may have set itself up with an option to 'Archive' your emails instead of 'Deleting' them - hence the appearance of the 'archive box' instead of the trash can. If you are an iTandCoffee Club member, you can find out how to turn that 'Archive' box into a Trash can. If you are not yet a member, why not join today!?
Sometimes it seems like someone is overhearing the 'question of the week' that I am being asked by clients.
The below article appeared in The Age today, talking about apps that drain your battery and including the below 'top five tips for reducing your IOS batter drain'. It is not about quitting the apps that appear in your multi-tasking bar. One key change to make is to stop certain apps from performing something called 'Background App Refresh'. Go to Settings -> General -> Background App Refresh, and switch any any battery hogs to 'Off'. But be careful to not turn off apps that need to refresh in background in order to give you up-to-date information. For example, I have left on Weather, and my new DataMan app so that they can show up-to-the-minute information. If this is all 'double-dutch', but you need some help to sort out your battery issues, iTea&Coffee can help with your technology issues. Call 1300 885 420.
