27/3/2015 0 Comments How to get access to Australian content when you travel - while keeping your online world secureIf you have ever travelled overseas with your iPad or iPhone, you may have been frustrated to find that you could not catch up on your favourite ABC programs on ABC iView, or watch the ABC News via the ABC app. This will have been due to the fact that online catchup TV providers block internet users who are accessing the service from outside Australia. So, how do you get around this? Well, you do what I have finally got around to doing. You sign up to a VPN (Virtual Private Network) service. Here is an article that reviews several such providers. Once you have created your and account with your VPN service, you install and sign in to this service on each of your devices.
You then choose which 'country' you want to be 'connected to' by choosing a VPN server that your service provider offers in that country. (Different service providers will offer different countries and server locations within those countries.) Not only will this allow you to access Australian content when you are not in Australia, you will also be able to access overseas content that is normally only available to locals. And the best part when travelling (or even when using a public WiFi network here in Australia)? Your privacy is protected when you use any public WiFi network, since the VPN creates something called an 'encrypted link' for any communications between your device and the internet. This will prevent anyone from 'stealing' your information - something that can happen to unsuspecting technology users at airports, in hotels and in cafes. If you plan on travelling in future and taking along your technology, this is something that you should definitely consider. iTandCoffee will run a session on the topic of VPN's later this year. 15/3/2015 0 Comments For travellers: how to get SatNav on your iPhone or iPad when you don't have internet
21/11/2014 0 Comments A warning on using Airline Wi-Fi One of the regular classes that iTandCoffee runs is called 'Travel with your iPhone and iPad' - but it really covers the topic of travelling with any internet-enabled device and phone. An area of which I find that most people I see, many of whom are frequent travellers, are totally unaware of the risks of using 'free' and even 'hotel' WiFi when they travel. Below are a few articles that I have scooped recently on this very topic - definitely worth a read if you are planning trip or if you travel for business. In particular, the article about the 'Darkhotel' malware is worth checking out if you travel and use hotel WiFi - which you may have previously considered quite safe! Some further articles relevant to travelThis problem affects so many travellers I see: not always Bigpond (and of course not always in Hong Kong!); sometimes Optus, TPG, iPrimus, Netspace, etc. Let's look at the Bigpond mail problem encountered by a client very recently. In this scenario, we are talking about a Bigpond email addresses that was created before 2012, so is set up as a POP3 email account on this client's iPhone. (Note. Newer Bigpond Accounts are 'Windows Live'/'Outlook' accounts that are a type known as IMAP, so do not suffer the same problem.) (If you are interested in understanding the difference between POP3 and IMAP email accounts, read this extract from the iTandCoffee Guide about the iOS 7 Mail app. For the full version of this guide, click here.) Here's what can happen ... When you are connected to your home Bigpond internet, you find there are no problems sending your emails. When you are out and about with your iPhone and on your Telstra cellular connection, there is also no problem. But, when you are on someone else's internet connection that is not Bigpond - for example, at a friends house, or when you are overseas and using a different Internet Service Provider (ISP) - your emails won't seem to send. You hit Send, perhaps even hear the Whoosh that seems to indicate it has sent successfully. But you then get a strange message that mentions 'relaying' and find your email sits in your Outbox until you are connected to Telstra again! Well, the issue here is with the type of email account that you have with Bigpond, and with the way it is configured.
