As of the end of September 2018, Apple has ceased its Photo Book printing service (as well as other printed products like Calendars, photo prints, etc.)
If you visit the Projects area of the Photos app and choose the 'create option' (the +), you will find that choosing Book simply gives you the option to visit the App Store.
If you choose this option, you will be presented with a set of Apps that can be downloaded to your Mac - Apps that will integrate with Photos as 'Extensions' and allow you to create Books, Cards, Wall Decors and Prints using the App instead Apple's now defunct service.
Here is an article about this change from Apple and how you can now use App Extensions to still create Photo Books from within the Photos app.
Not such a loss for many
I have to say that I chose in the past not to use the Apple Photo Book service, as I found it very expensive when compared to other options. Beautiful quality, but very expensive. It will remain to be seen whether the new options presented in the App Store will offer the quality of the Apple product AND value for money.
The first one that I have downloaded today to check out is called Mimeo. The price shown for a 22x28cm 20-page book is USD$29.99 ($42.50 at current exchange rates) and shipping would be USD$9.99 - a total of about $57AUD for a simple 20-page book.
This compares favourably with the full price of the service I usually use, Snapfish.
However Snapfish ALWAYS has discounts - for example, 60% off at the moment - so you never pay this full price. This means that the $57 book from Mimeo is quite expensive.
Snapfish is also very quick with delivery. I might try out Mimeo soon, to see what sort of delivery timeframe applies - and I'll let you know once I have done this.
