iOS 12 has arrived with some great new features - but make sure you do a backup before you install it.

Picture
Tuesday 18th September brought the arrival of iOS 12 for Apple Mobile Devices, and it has a great set of new features.  Of particular note are
  • The new Screen Time set of options for managing your own and you child's screen time and app/website usage.
  • Performance improvements that will breath new life into a slow device.
  • New Do Not Disturb options of 'one hour', 'until this evening', and 'until I leave this location'.
  • Siri Shortcuts - allowing you to set up series of instructions that can be activated with a single phrase
  • A new Measure app that allow you to measure sizes and distances.
  • A revamped Books app (replacing iBooks)
  • Fun new 'Memojis' if you have an iPhone X series phone. Here's a quick one I did for myself!
Should I download iOS 12?

iOS 12 does seem to be a pretty stable new release that may be worth taking on board earlier than you might normally take on such an upgrade.

As usual though, I recommend waiting a week or so to allow others to find the inevitable 'teething' problems and for the release of 12.0.1 with any fixes.

I installed iOS 12 five days ago, and so far have had no problems with it - although there have been a few reports of connectivity issues. Here is an article that describes these issues:
  • Apple iOS 12: Should You Upgrade?

If you too are ready to try out this latest/greatest iOS from Apple, the upgrade can be downloaded and installed from Settings -> General -> Software Update.

I found that it took 45-60 mins to download and install to my iPhone X (using my fast internet connection), so make sure you have enough time available before starting the process, and make sure the device is plugged in to power.

As ALWAYS, please ensure you have a backup of your device before installing such an upgrade, as there is always the chance that the upgrade could fail and you need to have a backup as an insurance policy.

When you upgrade your iPad, here's how to find your Control Centre

Just be aware that, when you upgrade your iPad to iOS 12, you will need to use a different gesture to get to your Control Panel.  Instead of swiping up from the bottom of the screen, you will swipe down from the top right of the screen.

Do you need help with backing up your device or upgrading?
