Recently, I have been seeing a huge number of my Facebook friends friend re-posting the same post (or slight variations thereof) - stating that Facebook is limiting posts from their friends and that, getting friends to leave a comment or sticker in response to their post will force Facebook to show posts from a wider range of their friends
"Here’s how to avoid hearing from the same 26 FB friends and nobody else. This post explains why we don't see all posts from our friends. Funny, thought if I followed you on Facebook I would see what you post. Not anymore.
Your Newsfeed recently shows only posts from the same few people, about 25, repeatedly the same, because Facebook has a new algorithm.
Their system chooses the people who will read your post. However, I would like to choose for myself, Therefore, I ask you all a favor - If you are reading this message leave me a quick comment, a "hello", a sticker, whatever you want, so you will appear in my news feed.
Otherwise Facebook chooses who to show me and I don't need facebook to choose my friends!
Do not hesitate to copy and paste on your wall so you can have more interaction with all your contacts and bypass the system. That's why we don't see all posts from our friends.
Thanks for the heads up from those who already copied and pasted the above. Hold your finger down anywhere in this post and "copy" will pop up. Click "copy". Then go to your page, start a new post on your page, then put your finger anywhere in the blank field. "Paste" will pop up and click paste.
Should I re-post this post? Will it change the friends' posts that I see?
Please don't re-post this post.
This is one of those viral hoaxes, one that got its 'legs' when Facebook announced in late 2017 that it would be limiting certain types of posts that you see. This led to suspicion that posts from friends were being limited.
Facebook was actually referring to posts and ads by businesses and publishers, rather than posts from your friends. In fact, their aim was to INCREASE the visibility of posts from your family and friends.
It is true that interactions with posts from business pages and publishers will impact how much you see future posts from those pages. But the same does not apply to posts from your friends.
The truth is that no-one really knows how the Facebook algorithm works.
But you can rest assured that you don't need to share this viral hoax to continue to see your friends' posts.
If you do want to influence the order in which you see posts from your Facebook Friends, you can visit Facebook's Settings -> News Feed preferences and choose the Prioritise who to see first option. Then tap/click the friends you want to 'favourite', so that their posts will appear at the top of your News Feed.
How to check the legitimacy of future claims you see on Facebook
You can always check the legitimacy of purported viruses, scams and claims on Facebook (or anywhere else) by visiting either the snopes.com or hoaxslayer.com websites, and typing in some keywords that describe it.
For the above example, I visited snopes.com and typed in the keywords "Facebook algorithm".
Here is the article that came up, describing this particular hoax:
