Should you upgrade your Mac to Mojave yet?

Picture
I have had lots of questions from Mac users over the past few weeks about whether it is time yet to upgrade to Mac's latest operating system, MacOS Mojave 10.14 (which is now at version 10.14.1, after an update released at the end of October)

I have to say that I have been using Mojave now for nearly 2 months and, in general, it is working without any issues. And I love some of the new features.
The only issue I have really found is with my Messages and Contacts apps, which 'freeze' on a regular basis.  But I suspect that could be more to do with the number of accounts and contacts that I have. In fact, I just discovered an article on this topic, and have just tried out the suggestions to see if this helps. So far so good!
  • Messages (on MacOS) has constant spinning… - Apple Community
When it comes to the question about whether you should update your own Mac, it is probably fairly safe to proceed now. However, here are some things to consider before you do ...
  • Have you backed up your Mac? If not, please don't upgrade until you have. (See below for a tutorial on how to back up a Mac.)
  • Is your Mac able to be upgraded to Mojave? See below for the list of compatible models.
  • Do you have any 'old' or 'specialised' apps that may not work with Mojave?
  • For example, I saw that a business called Genie Solutions (offering medical practice management software) is telling clients not to upgrade yet, due to problems with compatibility with their app.
  • Another example ... If you have the older Microsoft Office 2011 suite for Word, Excel and Powerpoint, there is no guarantee that this will continue to work, as this product is no longer supported by Microsoft and has not been tested with Mojave. (This can be easily resolved by upgrading to the latest Office version.)
  • Have you been making Photo Books using the Photos app and found that you are no longer able to order these through Apple? In this case, you will need to upgrade to Mojave so that you can use a 'third-party' provider to print your book (or re-do completely it using another photo book solution).
Here is the list of Mac models that can be upgraded to Mojave:
  • MacBook introduced in early 2015 or later
  • MacBook Air introduced in mid 2012 or later
  • MacBook Pro introduced in mid 2012 or later
  • Mac mini introduced in late 2012 or later
  • iMac introduced in late 2012 or later
  • iMac Pro (all models)
  • Mac Pro introduced in late 2013, plus mid-2010 or mid-2012 models with a recommended Metal-capable graphics card.
