*** UPDATE TO BELOW POST 22/5/17: If you have not yet updated to iOS 10.3.2, perhaps 'hold fire' for a few days to see if Apple releases a further 'patch' release this week. It may be that the below message - and further issues since with sign-in to my Apple ID - are due to problems with that update. If you have already updated to 10.3.2 and are having any problems, we would be interested to hear about them - please leave a comment below.
There I was, happily writing this week's iTandCoffee Newsletter, when the following message popped up on my iPad's screen.
It would be very nice to be in London, but I am currently here in Melbourne! So just who was trying to sign in to my Apple ID on an iPhone in London??
I, of course, chose Do Not Allow and promptly changed my iCloud password, forcing all devices associated with my iCloud to be signed out (as a precaution). Thank goodness I had two-factor authentication set up on my Apple account so that, even if someone had gotten access to my password (which I can't believe they did!), they would not be able to break into my account without my iPhone or iPad. Have you set up Two Factor Authentication on your iCloud account yet? If not, it's time to think about doing this - not just on your iCloud account, but on ALL of your online accounts. If you need help with this, talk to iTandCoffee on 1300 885 420. Find out more about iCloud - 'Understanding and Using iCloud'

A great feature of the iPhone and iPad (and Macs) is the 'Find my iPhone' (or iPad or Mac) feature of iCloud. By turning on the 'Find my iPhone' switch in Settings -> iCloud on the iPhone or iPad, or in System Preferences->iCloud on the Mac, you can usually find a mislaid, lost or stolen device from another of Apple device, or from any computer's web browser. Here is a handy hint previously published on this topic. But what happens if your battery has gone flat on the missing device. Can the device still be found? Well, this depends on whether you have enabled a particular setting on your iPhone or iPad - one that sends the last location of the device before the battery died. If this location has been sent, Find my iPhone can show this last known location. It is worth checking today if you have enabled this useful setting. Go to Settings -> iCloud on the device, tap on the Find my iPhone option, and make sure Send Last Location is turned On (ie. it is green). 1/2/2017 0 Comments Problem signing in to iTunes or iCloud on Apple TV or other i-Device after setting up two-factor authenticationA client who visited iTandCoffee this week had been unable to access her iTunes account on her Apple TV since she upgraded her iPhone to iOS 10 and activated the security feature called 'two-factor-authentication' on her Apple account - something that Apple really pushed us all to do when updating our devices to iOS 10. Her Apple TV kept giving her the error message that her iTunes password was not correct, even though she knew it was - and that password still worked fine everywhere else. Each time she tried to sign in on the Apple TV, she got a message on her iPhone saying that there was an attempted sign in. Even if she chose 'Allow' and got the 6-digit code on the iPhone, the Apple TV did not give her an opportunity to enter that code. The good news is that there is a solution to this, one that provides a way to sign in to an Apple iTunes or iCloud on a device that is not giving you an option to enter the 'two-factor-authentication' code We have added a 'Handy Hint' for iTandCoffee Club members on how to fix this problem. It is now in the Handy Hint Library - select the link below to view this hint. Not yet a member?Contact iTandCoffee on 1300 885 420 if you need help to solve this problem.

A client of iTandCoffee today asked how an automatic reply can be set up for her iCloud email account while she is on holidays. She wants a message to be automatically sent to anyone that emails her while she is away, with key information about what to do if they need assistance while she is away. 20/5/2016 2 Comments A warning if you are considering changing the email address associated with your Apple iCloud account ...During this past fortnight, I visited a client who had a tricky problem with iCloud. In a fairly standard appointment with a family, I was assisting in 'untangling' their iCloud mess, where some of the kids' devices had Mum's Apple ID used for iCloud and others had Dad's. As mentioned in another post this week, this was causing all sorts of havoc with mis-directed messages, full iClouds and more. The problem came when we tried to 'sign out' of Dad's Apple ID on the daughter's device. The password for Dad's Apple ID had been forgotten. This is not normally a problem, and a forgotten password can (usually) be fairly easily reset. (Here is an article that describes how to reset a forgotten Apple password.) In using the iforgot.apple.com webpage to try to perform this reset, we found that the Apple ID that was used for the daughter's device did not exist - so the password could not be reset. How was this possible? How was this possible, given that there was a device signed in to iCloud using this Apple ID? It turned out that the father had moved on from a job, and no longer had the email address that was associated with the Apple ID. So, he had signed in the appleid.apple.com and changed the email address to a new, current email address. HOWEVER ... The mistake he made was not signing out of iCloud on all of the devices that used this Apple ID BEFORE he changed the email address. Now, the old Apple ID doesn't exist - so attempts to sign out of any iCloud account attached to that address are unsuccessful. If he still had access to that old email address, he could sign in his Apple account at appleid.apple.com and temporarily change his account's email address back to the old email address so that he could then sign out the still-attached devices. But changing back to the old email address requires that he can receive a 'verify' email at that email address - something this father could not do, given that he no longer has access to the account. What can this family do to resolve the problem? The only option in this case is to talk to Apple - over the phone, not at an Apple Store - to try to sort this out. If Apple cannot find a record of the old Apple ID, they might be stuck , never able to sign that device out of the incorrect Apple ID. The moral of the story? DO NOT change your Apple account email address UNTIL you have signed out of iCloud on every device that uses that Apple ID. 20/5/2016 0 Comments Have you got problems with iCloud - 'storage full' message, mis-directed messages, muddled Contacts and Calendar, and more?If the problems described in the title of this post are familiar to you, then you definitely have a case of iCloud Confusion. This is such a common condition suffered by families who have inadvertently set up their iCloud incorrectly on the family Apple devices. Children get parents' texts and vice-versa, frequent warnings appear about iCloud being 'full', the kids' silly photos appear on parents' devices, and so much more. Is iCloud the Problem? The problem is not with Apple or iCloud. It is with the way that the various devices in the household have been set up, and a common misunderstanding about iCloud and Apple IDs. This is something that iTandCoffee covers in it's informative class, 'Understanding and Using iCloud', and in an easy-to-read guide by the same same. Related ArticlesHere's a question: What would happen to all your valuable photos, contacts data, document, texts, and more if your broke or lost your iPhone or iPad? If you don't sync your device with iCloud, back your device up to iCloud, or use iTunes to sync and backup your device, all your important data that is housed on your device will, most likely, be lost. It is devastating when it happens. For kids, it can mean the loss of important school or uni work. (Did your eyes just glaze over when I mentioned backups, iTunes and iCloud? Don't worry - you are not alone!) At the start of another school year, it seems like a good time to talk about backups again. Backing up your iPad and iPhone can be so easy - as easy as turning on a 'switch' in your iCloud settings. Do you know if you have done this? Many people choose not to do this, perhaps because they don't even know that the option exists, but often because they are worried about using iCloud - worried that it is something tricky, worried about their privacy and security, worried that they just don't know what it is or what it does, worried that it might cost them lots of money. If this sounds like you, why not come along to iTandCoffee's 2-hour session called 'Understanding and Using iCloud' on Wednesday 17th February, 10am-12pm. We will unravel that 'glorious mystery' that is iCloud and help you make sure that you don't lose any important contents of your Apple Mobile device/s. 31/1/2016 0 Comments Back to school with iPads: Make sure you set up your kids with THEIR OWN iCloudThis is a message that I keep repeating, because every week I deal with the mess that results from incorrect setup of iCloud. It is essential that, when you set up your child's iPad, you DO NOT use your own Apple ID to sign in to iCloud. iCloud Apple IDs are not meant to be shared - each person must have their own iCloud account. Have you made the mistake of using a 'shared' Apple ID for iCloud? If you have, I highly recommend 'undoing' this before the school year gets under way. Not doing so may risk loss of your data, and issues with storage space, messages going to the wrong person, and much more. For anyone who would like to better understand iCloud, iTandCoffee will be holding the Understanding and Using iCloud class on February 17th at 10:00am. Attendees can receive one-on-one help with 'unravelling' their iCloud mess immediately after this class. Of course, one-on-one help is available for you and your family - either in-home or at iTandCoffee. This can be especially necessary in cases where there are multiple devices that need to be sorted out! After hours appointments are available. 17/1/2016 2 Comments Purchased music won't download to my iPhone and my Apple TV doesn't show any musicAre you totally confused about what is happening these days with your music on your iPhone, iPad or Apple TV? I too found myself in this state during my summer break, when I went to play the Adele '25' album that I had purchased. At the time I was looking to play it, I had no internet service so needed to rely on my downloaded music. I knew I had downloaded Adele's album, but could not find the Album on my iPhone - despite it showing in my iTunes Store app that it had been downloaded. It was then that I discovered that all the music that I had previously sync'd to my iPhone from my computer had also disappeared, leaving me with nothing to listen to while 'offline'. Then, in setting up my new Apple TV, I couldn't get any music to show up in Apple Music - other than Apple Radio. I found that there are a couple of things to consider when sorting out issues with your Music under iOS 9, depending on whether you have turned on iCloud Music Library and whether you have an Apple Music subscription. Last night at an iTandWine gathering at iTandCoffee, one of the key topics discussed was that of iCloud - how to ensure that you don't get other family members' messages, what iCloud actually, does, misconceptions about iCloud, and how to set it up in a family situation.
Don't worry if you feel like you are 'in the dark' about iCloud. In nearly every family that I come across, iCloud is misunderstood and so often incorrectly set up. As described in another article published this week, this can have some pretty drastic consequences. Given the focus on iCloud at iTandCoffee this week, I would like to offer a resource that can hopefully answer all your questions, and help you ensure that you are correctly set up. iTandCoffee has a comprehensive, informative guide to iCloud, called 'Introduction to iCloud'.
