If you have ever had to delete a large number of photos from your iPad or iPhone, you will know that it can be a tedious process. iOS 9 now offers a much quicker way of selecting multiple photos - much quicker than tapping each and every photo you need. Now, when you are in 'thumbnail' view (in Moments or in an Album), you can go into 'Select' mode (by tapping Select at top right) and then swipe your finger diagonally across multiple rows of photos to select them. Watch the video below to see how it is done. If you, like a visitor this week to iTandCoffee, have the problem of the 'missing trash can' in your Mail app, it is because your mail account has been set up to 'Archive' mail instead of putting it in your 'Trash'. Actually, on that note, have you seen that, in iOS 9, Apple has renamed the Trash mailbox to Rubbish? This has also thrown several iTandCoffee clients. Below are the instructions for changing your Mail account setup (in this case my Gmail account) so that mail is deleted instead of archived. 9/11/2015 0 Comments If you are having trouble with Touch ID since upgrading to iOS 9.1, you are not the only one
When I first got my iPhone 6S Plus, the thing that I noticed straight away was how much better the Touch Sensor on this new device was, compared with my previous iPhone 6 Plus and iPhone 5S.
Lately, I had certainly noticed that the Touch Sensor on my iPhone 6S Plus seemed to be less reliable - sometimes just not responding at all, but then when I swiped, the screen unlocked without a passcode. I thought it might just be my own device with this issue - but the below article indicates that many others have been finding the same issue since upgrading to iOS 9.1. Have you noticed this problem on your device since upgraded to 9.1? I decided that I wanted to update the photo that I have on my Facebook profile, as the one I had uploaded previously was not very good quality.
The photo I had on on my FB profile was a photo of a photo that is on my family room wall. So, I re-took the photo using my very favourite apps, Scannable. Above is a resized version of the photo that Scannable took of the photo. If you don't yet have Scannable, download it and check it out. It is the BEST app for scanning documents. I never use my printer's scanner any more - my iPhone is my very portable scanner! But Scannable's talents are not just limited to document scanning. Try using it for all those old family snaps. It is a quick and easy way of getting all those old snaps digitised. Just make sure to use a contrasting background, and your photos will be automatically cropped and focussed. Try it out and let me know what you think! 30/10/2015 1 Comment A change I made on my iPhone that has made a massive difference to my battery life
A change that I made recently has made such a big difference to my iPhone's battery life. The last two nights, my battery was still at over 50% at 8pm, despite normal usage during the day.
Before that, my iPhone which down to about 20% or less by about 7pm each night - which was a pain if I was about to go out for the evening, and needed to rely on my phone having adequate battery. The 'Low Battery' mode is great and really does make your iPhone's battery last a significant amount of time while in this mode, but I was curious to see if the below articles had any measure of truth. Over the past week, I saw the articles that alleged that the Facebook app has been a major culprit in drainage my battery due to a bug in the app. So, I deleted the App and reverted to using the Facebook website from Safari instead. I saved the Facebook web page as a icon on my Home Screen - which made it look like I still have the App on my iPhone, making it very easy to access. (If you don't know to save a web page as an 'app icon' on your Home Screen, check out this week's iPad and iPhone handy hint, Turning your favourite web page into an 'app' on your Home Screen.) So, if you too are suffering battery issues and are looking for a quick fix that will (hopefully) make a big difference, try removing the Facebook app and see what happens. I will let you know if a see a future news item advising that Facebook has fully resolved this issue. Updates Sat 31st Oct 2015 Check your Screen Brightness I have realised since writing the original article above that I made another change around the same time as deleting the Facebook app. I also turned down my screen brightness, which had been at full brightness. Check out your own screen brightness in your Control Center (swipe up from below bottom of the screen and adjust the brightness slider (sun symbol). This might also help to dramatically reduce your battery usage. If, after making these changes, you are still trying to work out what's draining your battery, go to Settings -> Battery (a new Settings option in iOS 9) and find out which apps and features are the main culprits. When my screen brightness was at full tilt, my Home and Lock Screen usage was up around 40%. Is the News app using battery in "Background" When I check Settings -> Battery this morning, I was puzzled to see that the new 'News' app was using my battery, showing this usage was 'Background Activity'. This was despite the fact that I had turned off the 'Background App Refresh' feature, to stop any apps working in the background and wasting my data and battery. (Have you turned off this feature? Go to Settings -> General -> Background App Refresh, and turn this off to see if this makes any difference to your battery life. It seems that when the new News app was added in iOS 9.1, it was installed with the 'Background App Refresh' turned on by default. How annoying! So I had to temporarily turn Background App Refresh back on (in Settings -> General -> Background App Refresh), make sure it was specifically turned off for the News app, then turn the main 'switch' back to off - so that NO apps are refreshing in background again, as I had previously specified! If you see an image on Facebook you like - perhaps a lovely one of a member of your family that you would like to keep - it is easy to save that photo to your Photos app. Find out how in this Handy Hint for iTandCoffee Club Members. I explained to the class that this feature allows me to find my ringing phone in my bottomless pit of a handbag. So, I promised to include this Handy Hint from long ago about how to set this up. It is something that is so simple, but often undiscovered by many iPad users. There is such an easy way to adjust the brightness of your screen or your device's volume, without ever having to visit your Settings app. Just visit your Control Center, which is accessed by swiping up from below the bottom of your screen. Your volume controls are on the left, and brightness controls are on the right. Here's a quick video for those who need it. |
