Does your Mac's Wi-Fi keep joining the wrong Wi-Fi network?
Client Keryn T contacted me yesterday because her email seemed to have stopped working, even though her Mac showed that Wi-Fi was connected and she could send and receive emails on the iPhone.
The amazing thing was that I had encountered the same problem just that morning, where I had visited a regular client and, though my Wi-Fi showed that it was connected, I did not seem to have any internet. I had actually just started writing this very article in relation to this issue, just in case anyone else out there is suffering similar issues. Such a co-incidence.
If the internet does not seem to be working on my Mac even though the Wi-Fi looks to be connected, my first port of call is to check the Wi-Fi network to which my Mac has connected. This is because, even though my Mac may show the 'full bars' for the Wi-Fi, this does not necessary mean that the Wi-Fi network is the one to which I want to connect.
You will often find that there is a nearby Telstra Air or Fon Wi-Fi hotspot - and your Mac may have connected to this instead of the network that you expected to connect to.
Simply click on the Wi-Fi symbol in the menu bar at the top and click on the Wi-Fi network that you wish to join (instead of the network that was automatically joined).
This will solve your immediate problem.
However, you may wish for a more permanent solution, one that stops your device from connecting to the wrong network every time you start it up.
This can be achieved by adjusting your Network preferences, to tell your Mac which Wi-Fi network/s should take priority.
We have included a Handy Hint on this one in the iTandCoffee Club library, for those of you who are members of our Club. (Find out more about The iTandCoffee Club here.)
