So many kids have headed off to school this year with an iPhone (or perhaps even a iPad with cellular capability) in their pocket or school backpack. Whether that phone is on a pre-paid or monthly plan, or perhaps on a shared data plan, a key concern for most parents is that their child does not spent a fortune on mobile data.
To prevent your child from using excessive amounts of mobile data, it is simple to manage what apps and features of an iPhone (or cellular iPad) are allowed to use the device's mobile data.
For example, I allow Maps, Messages, Safari, TramTracker, PTV and a couple of others - but certainly not games, Facebook, Instagram, Viber, WhatsApp, Snapchat etc. (not that my young teen actually has these on his iPhone).
Just visit Settings -> Mobile (sometimes labelled Cellular, Mobile Data, Cellular Data) and scroll down to the 'Mobile Data' section.
Within this section there is a list of each app and service on the device, each with a slider that can be switched off (not green) to prevent that app/service from using mobile data. The app can still use Wi-Fi - just not Mobile Data.
By switching off all but the essentials on your child's device, you ensure that there is minimal wastage of mobile data.
How to stop kids turning mobile data back on for certain apps!
The issue for parents then is how to stop the kids from turning back on these mobile data settings!
As we all know, kids these days are more savvy than most parents when it comes to technology, and will surely know where to go to re-enable mobile data whenever they want to use it.
